Buzzing sound from 626R midrange ribbon
« on: 2 Sep 2005, 11:54 pm »
I'm getting an occasional buzzing sound from one of my 626Rs. It's in the midrange ribbon, and I've isololated it to the speaker by swapping cables. It's most noticeable on the tracking and antiskate tracks on the Hi-Fi News & Record Review LP, where it absolutely will not move to the other speaker no matter how much I adjust antiskate or azimuth. I initially noticed it in the deep bass and occasionally the vocals on Al Green's "Simply Beautiful" (from the original LP).

I tightened all the screws around the ribbon, but no dice.

I'm afraid I might have blown the ribbon when I was blasting some AC/DC earlier in the day.

Any recommendations, or do I have to send the speaker in?

It must be only one frequency that sends it into buzz mode... and a fairly unusual one.

Thanks in advance,
J!

Maybe Brian might jump in, but if it is one of the early ribbons that hasn't been "fixed"  then that might be the problem.

A few years ago B, got a large shipment of "defective" panels,  Some were shipped before the problem was known and it is possible you have one.

I have never heard of a Neo-Panel blowing up from playing AC-DC or anything for that matter.

If Brian doesn't answer this thread, e-mail him at VMPSaudio@aol.com and ask him what the problem might be.

Using a #1 Philips screwdriver, remove the four silver screws holding the panel to the front baffle and lift out.  Then clip the red and red w/green stripe wires as close to the ring terminals as possible.
