High current applications?
« on: 24 Aug 2005, 08:58 pm »
Hi All,

Jsut a quick one, I am considering buying a set of B&W 804's or 805's. The 804's apparently can dip to 3 ohms and work best with amps that can deliver high current at times. I am assuming that this is fine for the AKSA, but can anyone confirm for me.

Hi Matt,

No problem - the AKSA 100W is fine down to 2.5R impedance dips.  The 55W copes down to 3.6R.

Cheers,

Hugh

Hi Matt

You might like to experiment with biamping.  I have a pair of Axis LS88's that go down to about 2 ohms at crossover.  Because of that I suspected they would be better biamped and tried that with them.  It made a big difference so much so that when friends who heard them got a pair they always use the Rotel 5ch amp and biamp.  Of course such improvements are probably amp dependant so a bit of experimentation is required.  Although I have never tried my LS88's with an AKSA I have used it with a well respected ME amp and the Rotels biamped won over that - the ME won not biamped.  I did not try the ME biamped but I suspect it would have beat the Rotel.  So I guess the bottom line is try a bit of experimentation.

Thanks
Bill

Hi Matt,

Confirming my AKSAs have no problem at low ohms (my Maggie ribbon is supposed to be 3 ohms and the mid-panel is either 3 or 3.9 ohms - but who knows what they drop to at certain frequencies) but, like your B&Ws, Maggies like high-current amps and I am currently wondering whether my AKSA 100 is "man-enough" for the base panels!!   :D

I know the AKSA 100 has a big instantaneous-current capability but I don't know whether this can be classified as in the "high current" class ... compared to, say, Crown, Phase Linear, Innersound etc.

I can only say my Maggies SOUND fantastic   :D  ... but am I really in audio heaven or just a simulcra!!??  :o   I guess I'll nevva know till I try something else!!

Regards,

Andy

Haha nice one, Hugh!  "Ditty for a Dead Brat" indeed ... mon dieu, Monsieur Ravel would have apoplexy if he heard that epithet!!

PS: Are you familiar with Mozart's PC for a blonde, double-jointed trapeze artiste??
