Groneberg Cables, Standard vs. Premium
« on: 18 Aug 2005, 04:14 pm »
Just trying to decide on if it's worth it to upgrade my Groneberg cables to the premiums. I have power, ics and speaker cables. How much difference would the premiums' make?

Thanks.

I had pairs of the Groneberg Quattro ICs between preamp and amps, and CDP and preamp. I replaced the Quattro IC pair between amp and preamp with a pair of Groneberg TS Premium ICs, and hear more detail than before - it was a noticeable improvement for me. I still have a pair of Quattro ICs between CDP and preamp; I also note I use Groneberg speaker cable, and Odyssey Extreme Mono amps and Tempest preamp.

YMMV.

i started with the quattro reference ic and speaker cable and after i bought a symphonic line vibrato cd player from klaus i reasoned that a high end cd player deserved gronebergs flagship ic cables so i asked klaus to send me two pairs to audition with my system and as soon as i hooked them up i was shocked at the difference the ts premiums made in my system.this is no small feat mind you given that the quattro reference cables are very good cables themselves, but the difference was dramatic and immediate in my system! i now have ts premium ic.s between my cd player and my tempest preamp and from the preamp to the mono extremes. these cables are wonderful and i am not talking a small incremental increase in sound quality. in my system the difference is huge. in fact i have another pair on order because i like them so much. good luck whatever you decide to do.

..."call Klaus".  He really is a great guy to talk with, very helpful and full of information.  But, I really really wish he'd up-date his website.

i was looking for a good cd player and had talked to Klaus several times about different brands and i would mention brands and Klaus would either say something favorable about the brand or model or say nothing at all if i mentioned a certain brand or model. Klaus will not bash anybodys equipment because he has way too much class to do that. and at the end of one of these conversations i said to Klaus i am not sure what i want. i cant forsee myself owning a symphonic line cd player anytime in the near future.  he told me to call him the following monday and i did and he said i found you a cd player and i said what kind and he said a symphonic line vibrato it is my own personal unit but if you like i can send it to you to audition and if you like it i will sell it to you. of course i took him up on the offer to audition the player. this player is a handmade work of art it weighs around 35 lbs and does not have the typical digital hardness to the sound. it sounds like the designer of the unit Rolf Gemien says on the symphonic line website like a good record player. this cd player is definately a keeper and the internal dac in the unit is world class. if you would like to audition one of these players maybe Klaus can facillitate this. give him a call.

the retail price is 3.800 dm i dont think it is right to post how much i paid because it was a private sale between two individuals i bought it from Klaus bunge personaly not from odyssey audio or symphonic line. i know that he had some klarhiet 2 audio show demo cd players that he was willing to sell at a very reasonable price. if you or anyone else is interested in a symphonic line cd player give klaus a call. its really great equipment!

Hm..thanks for the feedback. I too have the Extreme Mono's and Tempest driving a pair of Herons from Meadowlark.  I am using currently the Marantz SA-8260 and a Denon DVD 2910.  I wonder how the Symphonic sounds compare to sacd?

i own a sony dvd/ sacd player and to say i prefer the symphonic line vibrato redbook cdp over my sacd player would be the understatement of the year. the vibrato is a very special cdp. the only way i could improve on this player would be to send it back to germany to have it upgraded to the new for 2005 24 bit edition which i may do in the near future. Rolf Gemien is a  lot like Klaus they both build factory hotrods!            p.s it is a shame meadowlark went belly up they built some very good loudspeakers.

That might be part of the reason your CDP sounds so much better than your SACDs. I had an entry-level sacd/dvd player before and the comparison to my SCD-1 isn't even worth making.  I'm not saying your Symphonic isn't wonderful, but to say it blows SACD away without using a comparable-level player is a bit unfair. What would really interest me would be to hear your Symphonic vs my SCD-1 playing redbook cds.  The Sony plays redbooks very well in addition to the SACDs. Too bad we're close to 7000 miles apart!

While SACD might go the way of the dodo, there are still a lot of very good titles out there, and the sound has to be heard to be believed. What SACDs do you have?  If you no longer use the SACD player and want to get rid of your discs, let me know what you have.

at no point in my post did i state that the sl vibrato blows away sacd.i only compared it to my own cheap sacd player in my system. and comparing sacd vs redbook mediums is a apples and oranges comparison at best. the scd-1 is sonys flagship player if i am not mistaken and i am sure your sacd can kick the snot out of my sacd player. if that makes you feel any better. the build and sound quality of the vibrato speaks for itself.

My apologies if I wasn't clear--I wasn't denigrating the Symphonic line at all and in fact would love to hear it play.

You had responded to Sonny's "how do SACDs sound compared to the Symphonic Line" post saying that your SACD player (without specifying which model) could not compare to the Symphonic Line.

Without that information it appeared you were comparing equal-level players and therefore were comparing formats.

When you said which SACDP you were using, I suggested that listening to a higher-quality player might give you a better basis to compare results, since that is what (I believe) Sonny wanted to know. Again, I am sorry if my wording led you to take what I said as a slight against you or your gear.

Getting back to the cables for a second - sounds like the Premium/Reference interconnects are worth getting. What about speaker and power cables? Klaus suggested that this wouldn't make too much difference. Anyone have these?

BTW, if you have an SCD1 or other moddable SACD player I can highly recommend the VSEI level 5 mod. I had it done to my SCD777 and the improvement is astounding. Wonder how it compares to the SL CDP on Redbook though? Knowing Klaus's product line and pricing perhaps I shouldn't ever look elsewhere. (Partly kidding.)
