I want to lean into headphones and am hoping ye all knowing ones can provide some guidance.
HP signal chain is currently Eversolo DMP A8 => Blue Jeans XLR => Schiit Lokius => Blue Jeans SE => Schiit Lyr+ (tube mode) => Grado SR325.
It could use a bit more bass thump and fuller mid range but in general I like the tonal balance of the Lyr / SR325. What I don't like is the experience is very much in the head / between the ears.
Primary goal is to get out of the head - a wider and deeper sound stage without going too analytical. Secondary goal is filling out the bass and mids. I'm quite sensitive to upper octaves (violin, piano, flute can literally lead to ear spasms). I don't want to lose detail / air but need to avoid anything that accentuates upper treble.
I'd like to start with headphone but would replace both HP and amp at the same time if needed. Budget for both is $2500. Used is preferred but right priced new is okay. Planar is preferred but dynamic okay for the right combination. Tubes in the signal path is good but again it's the combination that matters.
Short list based on nothing more than the internet cesspool is Audeze LCD3, Senn HD820S, Dan Clark NOIRE XO, Schiit Mjolnir 3 (new) and Woo Audio WA6-SE (TMR).
I'd very much appreciate your opinions.
One other question. How do you experience sound stage in headphones? The center image for me isn't in front of my eyes as it is with the speaker system. It's elevated as though the sound stage follows an arc as it pans from left ear to right instead of a straight line. Imagine the vocals on a drum platform instead of stage level. Is this typical of the in head experience?
Thanks much!
