HP / Amp Guidance
« on: Yesterday at 03:57 pm »
I want to lean into headphones and am hoping ye all knowing ones can provide some guidance.
HP signal chain is currently Eversolo DMP A8 => Blue Jeans XLR => Schiit Lokius => Blue Jeans SE => Schiit Lyr+ (tube mode) => Grado SR325.
It could use a bit more bass thump and fuller mid range but in general I like the tonal balance of the Lyr / SR325.  What I don't like is the experience is very much in the head / between the ears.
Primary goal is to get out of the head - a wider and deeper sound stage without going too analytical.  Secondary goal is filling out the bass and mids.  I'm quite sensitive to upper octaves (violin, piano, flute can literally lead to ear spasms).  I don't want to lose detail / air but need to avoid anything that accentuates upper treble.
I'd like to start with headphone but would replace both HP and amp at the same time if needed.  Budget for both is $2500. Used is preferred but right priced new is okay.  Planar is preferred but dynamic okay for the right combination.  Tubes in the signal path is good but again it's the combination that matters.
Short list based on nothing more than the internet cesspool is Audeze LCD3, Senn HD820S, Dan Clark NOIRE XO, Schiit Mjolnir 3 (new) and Woo Audio WA6-SE (TMR).

I'd very much appreciate your opinions.

One other question.  How do you experience sound stage in headphones?  The center image for me isn't in front of my eyes as it is with the speaker system.  It's elevated as though the sound stage follows an arc as it pans from left ear to right instead of a straight line.  Imagine the vocals on a drum platform instead of stage level.  Is this typical of the in head experience?

Thanks much!

Chasing speaker experience in headphones can lead to $$$$ wasted and disappointments IME.

Having said that, your budget is perfect for some Raal Sr1a/b with Schiit Jotunheim R amp on the used market :D

I've owned the Schiit Mjolnir 3 and sold it along with my entire headphone rig. If I decided to re-establish a headphone system, I'd buy the Mjolnir again. Awesome amp.

If you like planars that are not bright, then the Meze planars are the way to go, IMO.  Tons of resolution but zero brightness.  Very smooth.  Excellent bass and class-leading mids.

Yep. I had the Empyrean 1's and they were great.

Somewhere in the house I have a Headroom (now out of business) headphone amp.  It has something called crossfeed or similar.  It "moves" the music partially to the center of your, exactly addressing you issue. Im sure other amps must do it to.

This is from one of there manuals.

I would suggest the Audeze LCD2 Classic at $800 new.

Or the HifiMan Ananda Nano at only $319 new, a stunning value.

Both have large Soundstage.
The LCD2Classic have a more musical sound and the Ananda have a more neutral sound. These are minor differences; the difference that matters is the price. $800 versus $319.  :thumb:

Many thanks guys.   I'll definitely add Meze, Hifiman, and other LCD to the mix.  Something else to look at and for in the used markets.  The RAAL may be too niche for my tastes.  I remember the Jotunheim R sitting on Schiit's Last Call list for quite the while.

Head-Fi has always been a bit overwhelming but I'm guessing it's the right place to poke around.  I got really frustrated with trying to follow Schiit a while back and gave up.

Rif until recently Schiit had their Syn that would manipulate sound much in same way as the Headroom amp description.  I wish I would have bought one when I had the chance.  I would certainly be fun to play with now.

As amp I would recommend the SMSL H300 or H400, Iam using the H300, Low, Mid and Hi Gain, no prob so far and low price, with high value, however no remote control.
