GaN DIY Amp
« on: Yesterday at 08:43 pm »
Hi All.  I haven't posted here in an eternity.

I noticed that there are an increasing amount of manufacturers of GaN class D amp modules, for eg.

https://www.peakamplification.com/flexibles-products/am-700c1

https://epc-co.com/epc/products/evaluation-boards/epc9192

The EPC one seems to be a kit, but it seems aimed at consumer amp manufacturers.

My question is - are these reasonable DIY projects?  For the EPC, for eg. does one just find an aluminum case (with appropriate ventilation / heat sinks) hook up the recommended power supply in the correct voltage inputs, and there you have an amp?  It seems to come with RCA and XLR inputs, and speaker connections.

I know some companies like Orchard do complete kits, including soft start power circuits.  It also refers to cap boards - I don't know if that is part of the audio circuit or something to clean up the power supply.

Would I be over my head?  I can solder, and follow instructions - but that's about it.

Thanks!!

If you are not a experiencied tech my suggestion are to buy a tested and assembled unit from an manufacturer (not from a dealer with retail price).

Thanks Full Range Man.

I was just curious by that EPC kit in particular, as it seems to include both the amp module and a matching power supply.  It's not clear if it's missing any other necessary circuitry.

It would be great if we could rekindle the enthusiastic power filter group buys (and plans) of many years ago, among other great collective projects here.

If wholesale circuit makers and now designing circuit boards that are substantially complete, maybe these things are now doable projects?

The EPC kit alone is $950.  I can only imagine what a finished product containing that would cost...

Building amp kits are super fun. If just starting out, I'd maybe suggest kits that include a full material build parts list so you aren't having to piece everything together. That was one nice thing about the Pass Labs or Tubes4HiFi kits are they include full materials list and lots of online forum support. Building/purchasing a case is actually pretty easy, but sometimes a bit $$ for nice ones. Tube gear is a bit easier as a Hammond chassis and a drill or some hardwood board and aluminum sheet from Home Depot and you're set. If building your own case, a jigsaw, dremel, hole saw bits and sandpaper are definite musts.

Keep us posted if you jump into building something fun.  :thumb:
