Capacitor For HPF
« on: 7 Oct 2025, 07:17 pm »
I'm looking to buy a Miflex copper foil cap for a HPF. The value is 0.10uF. There are two available. one is 600VDC and the other 250VDC. What's the difference and which should i choose?
Thanks,
Stephen

For a hpf, 250v is just fine. You're sending signals of only a few volts, so no need for ultra heavy duty that I've found. If you were talking use inside your components that require 400v operation, that'd be a different story  :o

I always go for the lower voltage caps. they typically use thinned film and have a better sound.

That's a good value to pick from as they are often used for Bypass caps.

If you're looking at the 250v Miflex on HFC, that's probably the ones I would pick as well for that use.  Can't beat the price.

On the other hand, the Duelund CAST-PIO 600V you see there would be a great choice as well.  I have 8 of those for use as bypass caps.

Generally... lower V for crossovers, high V are for use inside equipment.  The .1uF CAST PIO have for bypass caps are 630V.  100V are quite a bit more money and notably bigger.  Compromise.

Some like the thinking of using as many of the "same" caps as possible... at least same design / manufacturer.

There's always something to grind your brain over with this stuff...

My Ottica's have Sonicaps and bypassed Deuland's and the tweeter just have the Deulands.  They are all CAST PIO's copper foil.  I think with the copper foil Deuland in the hi-pass filter it is just to much. I am going to let them burn in to see what happens before I change.  I am also going to get a good DAC so I will wait to see how that turns out.  It's an odd thing to hear the speakers sound soft when you can tell it has more dynamics from the octave being pulled off the mids tweeters and adding in the subs.

I would definitely let them burn in.  But could be too much too, like you say.  And... I like Sonicaps too. Those would work well in HPF.  I just wish the price on them hadn't gone up so much - it puts a lot of other caps into play like Duelund CAST-PP and Duelund JDM-PP.

And some may think Sonicap is every bit as good as those other 2 Duelunds... have to listen.

However, when I've seen nice pictures of HPF, Miflex has been a common choice, so this is going to work out great anyway.

I have been digging into caps A LOT lately... it's a pretty good way to sprain your brain.  :D

I don't mind spending money on Caps in fact I want the highest quality cap possible because the whole signal runs through it.  I just hope to find the write fit before spending much more.

Yep, let em burn in for a bit. I've seen multiple reviews say the tinned copper has a little more pizazz, but don't make yourself ponder a "grass is greener" scenario. Play out the burn-in process and give an honest listen. See what good attributes are still there and whether you're actually missing out or if other caps are just different. It's not like you're limiting yourself to Solen or Wima economy caps, you're already playing in the big leagues.  8)
