Hi Mike, I'm from Michigan, not far away. Have been into stereo/audio for over 50 years and have looked into/owned a variety of gear. I'm into small ensemble jazz and classical mostly but can't tear away from 60's/70's rock. My hearing is failing and moved into a smaller place where the room is too small for even monitors in a mid-field setup, so switched back to headphones (similar to my dorm room days).
Over the years have gone from single driver designs to 3-ways, to 2-ways but settled on active 2-way monitors for improved dynamics, superior accuracy, and surprisingly deep bass. Plus the concept of using a sophisticated low voltage crossover and mono blocks directly wired to each driver is undeniable. Prices run from $300/pair (JBL 305 Mk2) to $15,000/pair (Dutch & Dutch 8C) for really good sound. Features include no speaker cable, to wireless, to built-in room EQ.
The room is the most overlooked component of the playback chain IMO. In my last house I had a near perfect room: 8ft x 13ft x 21ft (the Greek Golden rectangle) to reduct echo; insulated walls/ceiling; basement location with no windows; insulated exterior fiberglass door with weather seal; flexible/lined/insulated ductwork (could barely hear the furnace fan); and 3 dedicated 20 amp duplex wall receptacles each on their own circuit and tied to a separate ground. The effect was spooky to start with but got used to it. It allowed me to listen quieter and appreciate the dynamics. Cost for all that, while we were building the house was minimal. Added room treatments but in that room the effect was minimal.
And remember, have fun.
