Dog peed on amp!
« on: 17 May 2025, 04:22 pm »
My wonderful dog peed on my 4b sst2 and now the red light stays on after powering up. I shut down , took off the top and am blowing a fan on it. Any other advice?  Besides putting down the dog?

Dog urine is even worse than water on electronics  :duh:
Keep amp unplugged and first blot off any leftover urine with dry cloth.
Use >90% isopropyl alcohol to clean off areas affected.
Leave cover off and leave in warm, well-ventilated area to completely dry for several days.
If you're lucky, it will work.  If not, send to service center..

If the red light stays on, it could mean urine trouble. Lol. I'm sorry, that was probably too soon. First, yes dry everything out, maybe give it all a wipe for anything still left. Visually inspect if you see anything burnt, discolored, or crispy fried. Check fuse to see if that just gave a pop. Worst case I could imagine would be sending in for checkup and repair but that'll mean no streaming on your stereo for a bit...  :duh: Still too soon?

As for the dog, definitely some intensive training is in his future. Lots of work for him to build that trust back up to roaming free in the house again, but it can be done. My wife and her friends are professional dog trainers and they see this quite a bit for marking things and even people in the house. Find yourself a good balanced dog trainer and put the work in.

Some spray on electronics cleaner that wont hurt circuit boards after the initial drying off may help.. It may be worth a shot..

Here is a detailed cleaning guide although I'm afraid the entire amp will have to be dipped so your room doesn't smell like pee when the amp warms up.

My experience on restoration work on electronics equipment we would remove any adjustable pots and unplug any tubes, things that we don't want getting wet. We used industrial strength soap that required diluting. With brushes, soap and water hose we scrubbed all of the 4 years of grime. Some power supplies had long arcing from the brown nicotine stains. We completed the cleaning task by leaving the equipment in a very warm drying room for a week.

Sorry to hear about this happening to your gear. One thing that briefly crossed my mind when I read your post if any of these amplifiers have static sensitive components in them. I remember when working on any circuit cards, we followed proper ESD procedures (wrist straps, proper work stations, approved packaging, etc...).

I hope that everything works out for you.

Be well...

Years ago, my dog pee'd on the grill of my speakers  :( .  Thank goodness it was only a small amount. After I got the grills cleaned up I built a little 3 side wood barrier around the base of the speaker.  Stained the wood to match the speaker but I still frick'n hated to look.....   :| but it worked.

After the last pooch passed away, I slowly decommissioned my fairly advanced reef tank and washed my hands of critters in my house.

Operations here run much smoother now.
