Using REW to measure Speakers
« on: 18 Jan 2025, 01:19 am »
Hi, All:

I'm a new member without three posts yet, so I can't use the search function.

I've used REW to measure room responses, and now I'd like to measure speakers like Danny does.  Can anyone our there tell me how to configure the measurement to produce results like the ones Danny shows us on YouTube (especially the waterfall plot?)  I understand that I need the mic set up on the tweeter axis and one meter away but I don't know if a burst input is used or how to set it up.

Maybe there is another thread that exists already to answer this but it's taking me hours of searching to find it.

Any help will be appreciated!

This question might be better addressed on REW's official support forum where there are many active REW users including the author.

Agreed that the REW forum is the most likely place to start. I found the stickies to be extremely informative. Maybe it was the questions I was asking but I hope you have better luck getting responses than I did.  You might even post your question to the GR Research circle here.
Matthew Poes may be another resource to consider.  His lane is acoustics but I find his insights and experience with REW / DSP to be especially helpful in the background.
Not knowing how much experience you have, my only other comment is there aren’t any short cuts with REW.  FR is pretty straight forward but learning to read anything else is a real investment in time.
I can imagine that close mic will capture cone breakup/resonances and such but I wonder how large a space or how short a time range is required to eliminate the room from the waterfall/spectral displays.
If you’ve not already referred to it, I also highly recommend the REW help index linked below.  The burst decay mode is new to me but is covered in the Waterfall and Spectrogram plots.
Fascinating and sometimes frustrating stuff but it’s a rabbit hole I enjoy.  Good luck!  Let us know what you find.

No mater where you put the microphone, you are still taking an room response measurement unless REW will allow you to take a measurement using a gated time window that will omit any room reflections.

Room EQ Wizard can make gated time measurements for response measurements.  Just like CLIO, setting the time window and seeing the resulting frequency response.
