Available again: M3 Sapphire tweeter
« on: 16 Jan 2025, 01:16 am »
I just noticed that Parts-Express is taking orders for the Peerless DA32TX00-08 1-1/4" Corundum Dome Tweeter that the M3 Sapphire uses. This was unavailable for a long while.

https://www.parts-express.com/Peerless-DA32TX00-08-1-1-4-Corundum-Dome-Tweeter-264-1678?quantity=1

They state "Estimated back in stock 5/2/2025"

This is good news, but I may be late in noticing. Has Spatial already been able to acquire some for customers who may need a replacement down the road? Or is this the first time they have shown up as available since supply chain issues a few years ago?

Clayton has a fix. I just sent him 2 of my tweeters. Luckily I have 2 extra tweeters from when they were available.

Are you saying he is repairing tweeters that have been damaged or otherwise are not working correctly?

I'm still wondering whether the May 2025 batch implied on Parts Express is the first since the supply chain issues following the pandemic, or whether there have been some produced in the last year or so and this is the 2nd batch.

Sent you a PM. As far as I know this is the first batch that I have seen since I have been regularly checking.

I don't believe the Peerless driver Parts Express sells is exactly the same as the M100 in the M3. At approx 1:18:00 In this youtube video -> ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYaYCgwmHi8) Clayton talks about the "tweeking" he had Manufacturer do to this driver to make it work for him.

Yes, I just noticed in the "Q&A" section on the tweeter's page on Parts Express, someone posted an answer that "The tweeter for the Spatial speakers is a modified version of this tweeter with a modified voice coils and ferrofluid cooling."

So, buying the tweeter from Parts Express would not provide a drop-in replacement for the tweeter in the M3 Sapphire. Spatial Audio or Clayton would need to acquire a custom batch like the originals. It sounds like this would be a batch produced by Peerless rather than a mod that could be done reasonably after manufacturing.

Makes more sense now.  Going off not so reliable memory, I recall Clayton crossing it at about 500 hz whereas the specs state something closer to 1000.

It would be possible, it seems, for Spatial to order a batch of correctly modified M3 Sapphire tweeters and offer them for sale to owners.

These tweeters have proven somewhat fragile, but they are a drop-in, no solder replacement.

I know Pass Labs has bins of out-of-production transistors going back more than a decade so they can support owners of their out-of-production products. It's the kind of conscientiousness that attracts customers to a business and builds long-term loyalty.

These companies usually have a minimum order quantity for a special run like this which would most likely make it impractical for Spatial to do this.

We will get a few of these in for testing to see how they perform. We have M3 and M4 speakers available that we can use for comparison purposes. It will be interesting to see how they sound vs. the current production S4.

Awesome. Seems like it will be a few months, but I look forward to learning what you discover.

Having one or two reasonable options for replacement of the M-series Sapphire tweeters would be a welcome development.

Many thanks.

New tweeters from Clayton arrived today and I can't tell the difference. I will leave these in for now to break in.

How are they affixed to the mounting plate? It doesn't look like the screw holes in the mounting plate line up with screw holes on the tweeter.

Looks like some type of adhesive.

Makes sense. There are plenty of suitable choices for that.
