Sub dilemma
« on: 31 Dec 2024, 08:23 pm »
I ordered a pair of Bullies that I should get in January. I will be replacing a pair of Magnepan 1.7s. I have two Rythmik subwoofers that I use with the Magnepans. I was thinking about selling off my old stuff, but now I wonder if I should keep both subs and get two splitters for my preamp and have basically four subs. Am I nuts? Are four subs better than two? :green:

I think you already know the answer -- keep those damn subs!!!

I have three dual subs for music only and if I had more space, I'd add another one. That's what I do -- use a splitter on the preamp.

Yes, 4 subs is better than 2.  You can set up the 4 in a 'swarm' to get much smoother in-room response.

This is completely normal.  If you are questioned, just send them here and we will vouch for you.

I have dual XLR outputs for each channel from my preamp.  One pair (Cardas Wire) goes to main amps.  A second XLR output from preamp goes to cheap Amazon XLR splitter to the subs. Using "Good Wire" to the subs. In fact, using Mogami 2549. "Worlds Best Cables" on Amazon for Mogami wire.

That's okay, we are all a little nuts for this stuff.

Is it “ok” to replace the Maggie’s with the Bullies and keep the Rythmik subs between the speakers? I really don’t have room to move them,

I am very interested in how the Bullies compare to the Maggies.  I am eventually going to move on from my Magnepan 1.6's.  Please write a detailed review when you get a chance.

You can use them in addition to the Bully's. However, moving them to the rear of the room and running them out of phase with the woofers in the Bully's would do away with a lot of room modes and even out bass response very nicely.

What level should I set the crossovers to in order to blend with the Bullies?

If you set the Bully's to high damping, and the 28Hz extension, then you can set the crossover to them pretty low.
