Panasonic XR25 sound dropping out
« on: 13 May 2005, 09:20 pm »
Hey,

I've recently moved into a new house and have found that whenever the A/C or the fridge kick on my pannny digital receiver loses sync momentarily.  I'm guessing this has something to do with the switching power supply on the Panny.  Now it only does this with my Jolida CDP but not with my DVD player.  Odd.

Anyway I prefer my Jolida much better as a transport than the DVD player.  In fact I must have cleaner electric in my new house because the sound is pretty damn smooth.  Borderline analog but not quite if you know what I mean.

For the time being I want to stay digital as I'm finding even my crappiest recordings sound pretty good.  However the drop outs are annoying so I'm wondering if the new Panny receivers or even the JVC are less finicky.

If it's only happening with the Jolida, I'd guess that it's not liking the huge loss in power when the A/C or fridge kicks on. It's probably not outputting enough of a signal for the Panny to pick up at that point. But when the power stabalizes after the A/C or fridge is on, then the Jolida has enough power to work with to output a constant signal.

Try running the Jolida on another circuit, even if you have to run an extension cord to some other part of the house to run the test.

Matthew,
Are you using an upgraded power cord?  I have a 45 and I was about to send it in but I think the problem was remedied by switching from my homemade power cord back to the factory one. The non-stock cord isn't with me right now so I can't verify this for sure but it appears to be the issue.

As a follow up I discovered that the sound drop outs were cable related.  I'm not sure why but my cheapo Ratshack digital cable does the trick, ie no drop outs.
