Fan or no?
« on: 9 Aug 2024, 03:40 am »
Since my preamp is sitting on my amplifier I thought it might be good to mitigate some of the heat by creating some air movement up and and out.

The fan is set on low but it does keep the case quite a bit cooler.

Just looking for opinions if this is okay to do (or not) for the electronics?

3 or 4 of these under each foot would provide airflow that's likely more effective than the fan. Is the fan blowing up or down into the case?

These, and similar, are ~$9 for a set of four on Amazon.

You still need to put something under the feet of the preamp and create some separation between the two units transformers. There are many alternatives for that for not much money including what was already shown.

Would it not make more sense to put the power-amp on top and your problem of heat rising goes away.

IMO, a fan isn't even a requirement in this situation.  There is plenty of airflow around these components.  However, if the fan makes you feel better about it, it's not hurting anything and you having it blowing upwards is the correct direction.

Do you live in a hot area?
My suggestion are dont stack equips that build heat, except CD players.

In my experience Odyssey amps don't produce a lot of heat.??

Yeah, mine don't but I've also read that it depends on bias and load.

The preamp gets warmer than the amp though.

Based on my (visibly the same as yours) preamp that sits by itself on the shelf and never gets warm, my guess is that any warmth you feel from your preamp is being generated by the amp underneath it.  It would seem odd to have an amp on top - for whatever reason, we always see the preamp on top) but that'd be something to toy with.  But I'm with the other posters who suggest some sort of risers would do the trick, and if your fan is quiet enough you could position that to draw air from between the two units.

I appreciate your input.

I think why this preamp gets warmer than the amp is because it has tubes in it.

Okay I see now, it’s a valve pre. Are you able to move the plant and the vase off the sideboard, so you can put the Pre & Power next to each other?

Sadly no.
I'm comfortable with running the fan considering the difference it makes.

My only concern is the possibility that this preamp is supposed to run at a certain temperature and I would be bringing it below that temperature.

It's a very slight airflow and it still gets warm but not really really warm.

I'm going to run it without the fan and with the fan and take temperature gun measurements and see the difference.

My Pass Labs XA25 is Class A and runs hot. I called Pass Labs, and they said that I should be able to hold my hand on the top for a few seconds without feeling like I'm getting burned. It was running at about 120 °F, which was ok according to Pass Labs.

It could be apples and oranges, but maybe it helps.

Here's what I measured:

I did a temperature test on the preamp top.

Right above where the tubes were it was 121° without the fan.
95° with the fan on low.

Brilliant! Take the heat generated by the amplifier and suck it through the preamp so it can be hot too!   :duh:

There's a 25° drop with the fan on low when compared to no fan.

So as this pre have tubes you need use it with the top cover removed in the winter and add the fan in the summer IMO.

Must be noted that the surrounding space will not cool the pre and power, since the hot air does not go down or made curve sideways apparently, hot air tends to rise if there is free space.
