intro question
« on: 22 May 2024, 01:13 pm »
hello! I got notified I had to make several posts as a new member so I wanted to take the opportunity and immediately ask a question. I am interested in building my own speakers. what would be the best general circle / forum for this?
I have woodworking experience but as for audio I am a complete novice. I have several questions regarding the amount of drivers / tweeters per speaker as well as a question about placement / attachment of the tweeter(s) and optimal setup for the speakers (speaker stands or just a tall speaker or even hanging them up).

I hope someone can point me in the right direction since I am excited about this new journey :)

all the best
Teun Hamelink
(also what is the knob that controls volume to each speaker starting with a b and has 7 letters? I feel very stupid but I couldn't post because I have no idea what they mean)

Welcome to AC  :thumb:
It could be the Balance control used in preamps.
Do you could check the Enclosure Circle and the Open Baffle Circle.  I will adress you later when I arrive in the desktop PC.

Welcome!

Building your own speaker cabinets is a crap shoot, lots of proud papa's out there.  Suggest looking for a kit (drivers/crossover) and trying hard to audition first.   ITn fact invest lots of time to audition gear.  Take a selection of your favorite music to serious audio shops (with dedicated listening rooms) and take notes.  Train your ears as to what you like.  Find an ideal room (not small or square, well insulated, and private that you can dedicate to listening).  My room is in the basement, 8ft x 13ft x 21ft (Fibonacci ratios), and smartly insulated.

The best speakers are active, used in nearly all recording studios.  Actives use low voltage (sophisticated) crossovers that can include DACs and room EQ and amps individually loading the drivers (to provide a synergistic loading and lower bass).  Prices for good ones range from $300/pair (JBL 305 Mk 2) to $125,000/pair (PMC BB6 XBD-A).

Welcome to AC!

'B' with 7 letters = balance

Kit speakers are definitely the best approach. Do you want to build 2-way, 2.5-way, 3-way, 4-way, open baffle (OB)?

I am interested in building my own speakers.
If you have a hi sensitivity speaker as 100dB and bening impedance curve there is no much things to upgrade IMO, maybe inside the enclosure if you are picky as myself. Today audiophiles can take advantage from inexpensive and transparent powerful Class D or GaN-FET amps and recently with Lii Audio, also take vantage from inexpensive big cones full range drivers, this will save a lot of money hence no crossover and no enclosure need. Enclosures are need only to make bass below 200Hz or so, a hi Qts fullrange driver as Visaton B200 dont need a enclosure, it will work fine as OB.

This is a inexpensive DIY project from an AC member, it have only four(4) parts: Eminence Alpha15A + 4.7mH + Visaton B200 and a MDF baffle.

Other option are the Lii Audio F15 FR driver $399/pair, not each.
Here Decware OB with the Lii Audio F15 driver:

If one have a woodworker is possible try the Lii Audio F15($399/Pair, pair not each) 97dB/8Ω and benign impedance curve suited to OB or Bass Reflex box or the F18($540/pair), no Crossover, no Tweeter beaming, no Phase rotation, no driver sensitivity loss, no Harmonics loss, no Retail price.

My personal choice is the Lii F18 in Single Driver configuration, but if you make question of wanting a 2-Way speaker you may want a bigger woofer than the Alpha15A, so there are W18 inches and W21 inches from Lii Audio, personally I dont like these two VCs woofers, they are hard to drive with a small tube amp.

Thank you guys all so much for the warm welcome and tips! I will surely check out those circles.
also thanks for recommending me not to start fully from scratch haha. I will consider a kit first or a something cool with a full range driver! and from there begin to gather more experience in this field.

all the best and maybe see you in another circle post :)
