Just picked up After the Gold Rush.  Damn, this sounds like a South Park parody of Rock, not a real artist.  His voice and lyrics are so bad as to be comical.  This guy actually has a fan base?  Wow.

Really, it does sound like a South Park parody.  Sort of like Satan's overly earnest "Up there" song in South Park the Movie, only with a rock vibe.  Hilarious.

On a better note, I also picked up Bjork's SelmaSongs CD, now this is good music.  Her voice is smoother and less irritatingly whiney than usual.  Good stuff.

Different strokes for different folks.  I personally thought that was an amazing album when it came out 30+ years ago, and if I hadn't heard it a zillion times by now, I'd be still playing it.

Music is very much a matter of personal choice.  I have found that if something doesn't appeal to me its better to just move on and find something more appropriate to your tastes.

Listen to Harvest if you want a dose of Neil doing some of his best stuff.  My frame of mind when listening to Neil is much the same as say when I listen to Bob Dylan or even going farther back to early folk music.  It's a little goofy at first but I gradually respect the craftmanship and then the musicality of the artist.  "Those were different times"  Most of that music is the building blocks to what is produced today.

One reason I don't care for shows like South Park is because they reduce everything to satire...and well South Park just isn't funny IMO (Beavis and Butthead though is funny IMO) I think they also deform youth culture's perspective.  Unless the song's got fuck yo' or a hundred times it's un-cool.

I second the nod for Harvest.  A brilliant album.  I suppose you either love Neil for you hate him, tho.  I guess like Hendrix.

I see that Live Rust is now out on DVD; I'll have to get this one.  It was filmed 30 years ago, but hopefully the sound and visuals will be good.  It almost doesn't matter- to see Neil do "Sugar Mountain" would be worth the cost of the disc.

I had the good fortune to see Young about 12 years back, with Soundgarden opening.  They were pretty average, but Neil Young live was live a religious experience.

After The Gold Rush wasn't my favourite Neil album, neither was Harvest, Rust Never Sleeps was good, but has it's low points.  I think the problem with Neil is that he can't do an entire good album, but has some great stuff on each one.  That's why I just picked up Decade, a dual CD "best of".  It's got Mr. Soul, Cinnamon Girl, all the great Young tunes.  The recordings leave something to be desired, but it's a good example of how the "Grandfather of Grunge" got going.  You can hear all those 5th chords in there all over the place,  recorded almost 30 years ago.

As a new comer here but as an old time Neil Young fan (30+ years) I'd recommend the first NY release "Neil Young" and the "On the Beach" album.  I say album for the latter because you can't get a cd of "On the Beach".   Many  agree that this particular album was/is the best work by Young.  Also you "pilgrims" might want to check some of Neil's earlier work in Buffalo Springfield. My $0.02 worth.

I just happened to be browsing and saw this topic and the responses and have to add my .02 dollars worth.   I also have been a NL fan for 30+ years and have to say that After the Gold Rush is one of my all time favorite Neil Young albums.  I have just about worn out my CD but I figure I can always buy another one!!    Neil Young rocks!

I picked up Tonight's the Night on vinyl recently - pretty awesome, although, like fine scotch, an acquired taste.  Zuma's another sweet one.

If there are Rock Gods, Neil Young is one of them. "Decade" is a good compilation. Nobody has presented great music in as many styles as N.Young. From straight country (not Shania Twain turgid pop country) to arena rock and beyond. "Freedom" was a statement album of its times, do they have those now? And that was after 20 years in the biz. My favorite though, is "Cortez the Killer" from "Zuma" with crazy horse circa 1975. Check out the Rust never sleeps  concert on video. Rock Gods are in short supply these days.
