Introducing myself
« on: 19 Apr 2022, 03:44 pm »
Hello,

My name is Albert and I have been in the audio hobby for more than 50 years.   Actually joined hear as I am looking for a pair of Bryston Mini T speaker stands but always looking for information, sharing, selling etc.
Looking forward to a great relationship.

I've introduced myself before, but I've been asked to do it again, and happy to do so. During the past few (covid) years I built a pair of NXOticas and a dual sub, added GRR's speaker cables, and upgraded most of my components. Now settled on a PSAudio CD Transport, PSAudio DAC, Dodd Audio Preamp, and trying a variety of Amps.

Next Project: my wife likes to listen to NPR while she is working/playing on her computer. She appreciates the great audio from our main system, but for good reasons she wants her own audio at her computer desk. Changing her mind is not an option. I support her and I want to provide the best I can. So I'd like some advice:

1)   This will be a radio-source nearfield stereo system, so there is no need to deliver high fidelity above that limit, and no need for any alternative sources.
2)   I have an existing Parasound T3 Receiver in excellent condition, leftover from the very old days. Is there anything better today? I need one station only--NPR on FM, but expect that any receiver will provide full FM bands. I’m willing to use the T3 as the source or to sell it; it’s current value is about $400.
3)   I want to use a pair of Danny’s speakers—either the new LGKs or the XLS Encores--which ones for this use?
4)   Add an excellent, small integrated amp in 10W-20W per channel range. I greatly prefer tube or hybrid, but hey, it’s only radio, something like Emotiva T1 might be OK. Any recommendations?
5)   Any better ideas or recommendations?   Thank you!

Changing her mind is not an option.

So surprising :green:  Since you already have the receiver, it's probably best to use it, especially since the source will be FM.  If you sell the receiver and go with an integrated (unless it is something like the Emotiva TA1 that has a built in tuner) you'll need a tuner.  You could also sell the receiver and get NPR (and tens of thousands of other stations - e.g. just look at Shoutcast or Tune In Radio) on the web - https://www.npr.org/about-npr/187046089/ways-to-listen-to-npr     I recently simplified my desktop system with a pair of Vanatoo Transparent One Encores but they also make a cheaper model -  https://vanatoo.com/shop/speakers/transparent-zero/

Obviously, using the computer as a source leaves the possibility to playback music files as well.  With the above speakers, you can even play back things from your phone (even NPR with their App).  It also makes it easy to playback YouTube videos.

Welcome aboard!

If FM is solid in your area you have what you need. But where’s the fun in that?

I’m contemplating my next desktop setup if/when my 30+ year old Optimus STA300 ever gives up the smoke.  On that day it will be replaced with one of Schiit’s headphone amps / preamps with the preouts going to a pair of powered speakers.  Primary source will be a Bluesound Node (All the streaming options including Tune In).  I’m already in the Bluesound ecosphere, which I like real well, but there are others.

My name is Andy, and I have been using a BDP-1 and a BDA-1 for several years to drive a primarily MartinLogan system; pretty sweet. I'm basically here for tech tips.

Cheers
