AV123 LS-6 Max Crossover Options?
« on: 8 Nov 2021, 01:35 pm »
Hi All!

Thanks to Danny and Hobbs for helping get my X-LS Encores maxed out, I now have the itch to max out the crossovers of my Rosewood AV123 LS-6 and Hugh built LS-C.  I have found stuff on Audiocircle with Mojave and others doing upgrades, but most seem to be either from a company that isn't around anymore or just mild upgrades to the stock crossover.

Any options for a max crossover with point to point connections?  I'd prefer foil inductors and best or close to best caps.  Anyone done this?

Thanks,
Robert

Count me in as another who would be interested .  I've always found it a bit of a pain opening up the binding post "hatch" to change the bass management settings . So , perhaps an external box containing the x-over and the bass management module would be doable? Throw some tube connectors on it ? Robert , here's a pic of my setup just because I know you dig Moho  8) ......

Love the pic!  Beautiful speakers. I think you need to sell them to me.  ;)

I know a former Audiocircle company offered external crossovers, so I know it’s doable. Just not sure anyone is doing this now given there’s not much of a market.

The name Bill Baker(?) comes to mind , but that was years ago and the cost was a bit too steep at the time . IIRC .

I couldn’t find a price anywhere and they appear to not be around anymore.

I believe Elon is currently making custom crossovers for people at a really reasonable price to boot.

As for parts I'll need to ask Danny about the schematic to see what we have available or some options for upgrades like Foil inductors and such

Thanks Hobbs!  Specific potential options would be helpful.  Elon did some of your cables for me and did a fantastic job.  He knows I have no problems bugging him on a crossover.  ;)

The best bang for the buck tweaks are to replace the cap and resistor in the woofer circuit, and then add some by-pass caps to the tweeter circuit.

You guys will be surprised how far that will take them, and you can make those updates right there on the board.

Danny,

How painful is a full point to point XO for these?

Not that bad.  Since mine was built from a kit, my crossover is point to point.  However, I did build mine to go outside the cabinet to make further upgrades easier.

Angel City Audio is the last place that I saw them for sale.  He still has them listed (out of stock).  The LS9 is $18,500; for quite a while he had them at around 10K

Those are completed speakers with upgrades. Crazy expensive though.  Makes me want to hang onto mine all the more. LOL

I remember those. They are beautiful speakers.

The LS-C is loaded with good quality parts.

You are going to need some serious wall treatment on those first reflection points right next to each speaker, or that early wall reflection is going to really jack up the response.

I have some that are right out of frame on the walls, but they mightr need to move as they were placed for the mini's that lived there beforehand. im going to shoot you a pm Danny as im curious what you know about the history of this pair
