Super 7 / Neo10s
« on: 6 Mar 2021, 05:50 pm »
Hello and sorry if I'm bringing up a touchy issue.  I've had an interest in getting planar magnetic speakers.  In watching various YouTube videos and scouring this forum, there's been mentioned of the Super 7s.  Now as I understand it, these aren't currently offered by GR research as they are (or had been?) looking for a quality and reliable supply of a Neo10 driver replacement.

My question is simply, are there any recent developments concerning this?  Would a return of this product likely be months or years off?

Thanks,
Charles

To my knowledge, you can still occasionally purchase Neo10 drivers from Parts Express, but at $370ish a pop, (on the rare occasion they're in stock) its a hard sell, esp since you would need 8 of them for a pair of Super7s... (Thats just shy of $3000 on drivers alone..)

Danny hasn't been able to make much headway, esp considering there are still patents in place around the BG Neo10..

The PE GRS Neo10 clone is decent as a midbass driver, but can't play as low as the Neo10. It needs a separate bass driver for anything under 300Hz esp since the subs can't play up high enough to meet them. But there may still be patent issues even with those in the future, but time will tell.

If we're lucky, we may see some developments in the future, but for the time being, it's pretty slim that we'll see anything soon.

As a Super 7 owner I can relate.  I waited for years.

Ever since Danny came up with the dual open baffle servo subs I knew these were going to be game changers.  When the Super 7 was announced they were originally going to be sold by Serenity Acoustics for $20k!  And then the tweeters went away and there were no more Super 7’s.  At least I could still get the subs.

A few years go by and Danny makes his own tweeter.  Jay makes new cabinets!  The stars aligned and I jumped because I knew what I wanted and had the money.

A month or so later the Neo 10’s went away.  And the Super 7 as well as it’s bigger brother became unavailable once again.
Like these speakers are friggen cursed!  (Maybe because they are just too damn good!)

So, long story short, be patient.  Or if you can’t wait you can still get great sound from the NX series.  Or the X series.  They may not be planar but they still punch way above their cost.

I got lucky like corndog did and jumped on a pair when I had the chance right before the Neo 10s became unobtanium. They replaced a pair of NX-Ottica monitors. I wouldn't fret too much though. The NX-Ottica monitors are outstanding so I know the tower version and the NX-Treme are probably nearly on the Super 7's level.

Hopefully the Neo10s will become available again at a reasonable price.

The BG NEO10 drivers are no longer available from Parts Express according to the website awhile back.

You may find them on Ebay as well, but other than that, they are no longer available.  Not sure what Christie Digital has done after buying the patent and releasing them, but they seem to have dissapeared.  The GRS 10" planar from PE is the closest relative until Danny is able to possibly build his version.  The GRS 10" needs a different XO design to work.

While not cheap, could a grid of GR Neo 3s be engineered to substitute the Neo 10 requirements?

No, the NEO3 low frequency response will not go down to 200Hz.

Ah I hadn't realized that PE had officially discontinued the Neo10.

A single Neo3, used in a waveguide, can maybe play down to 900hz before distortion becomes an issue, tho its safer to crossover around 1-1.5K range.
I'd guess that 8 of them in a 2x4 arrangement may get you fairly low, but likely nowhere near as low as you would need.

Not to mention that Neo3s are also quite expensive, last i looked, they're $90-120 each, and most are the PDR/PDRW and closed-back variant, which have a better dispersion pattern, but are less also efficient.
Danny's Neo3 is a little cheaper, but still not worth the cost for something that likely won't work.

Some  folks are still souircing them , they do come up once and a while  We've actually  need to cut  a couple pairs of Super 7 cabs and a pair, maybe  2 of the Line Force redesign  we did.

Was a real shame to see the Neo10's disappear as we put quite a bit of time and effort  into  these designs,  I thought the  Super 7  kits  were pretty cool
