SOLD: Allison CD-9 Speakers in Virginia

 :green:

Almost a shame to part with these, but I don't have a constant use case for them, and I'd rather have someone use and appreciate them.

A short summary to those not in the know.  Allison speakers are made to work with room boundaries, and thus need to be placed fully against the wall.  So only 2 square feet of living space need be dedicated to these.  But they use proprietary ultra-wide dispersion mids and tweeters to create a stereo image so wide it makes your room seem considerably larger than it is.  The acoustic suspension bass from the 10" woofer is surprisingly strong for the cabinet size.

In size comparison with my Von Schweikert VR-33's, which were also designed for front wall placement:

I've compared these two pairs of speakers (writeup still forthcoming) and I will say from my own experience the CD-9 is 85% of the speaker the VR-33 is, even though it's 25 years older, a foot shorter, and barely over half the weight.  Its output defies its size!

Woofers were re-foamed in summer 2020 after I acquired them.  My wife put new stain on the veneer, and fresh paint on the rear panels.  All original drivers, and original grilles.  They look and sound great!

Asking $700 or reasonable offer.  Located in Hampton, Virginia.  Pickup only, but would be willing to drive a little ways to meet, but you won't be able to demo them that way.

Close up of the M/T sections.  Drivers are protected, no pokey pokeys.

I am very familiar with these. A friend/former neighbor had a pair, and I had the 'little brother' CD-8. These are awesome speakers that will sound great in almost any room you put them in, so long as you follow the simple placement guidelines. Looked up the VR33 and it appears to utilize similar design principles. Good to know Roy Allison's discoveries still live despite having been largely forgotten by most of the industry and public. A read through the 'Acoustics Circle' will show many struggling with problems that were solved by Allison nearly fifty years ago, some spending $$$ on treatments, 'room correction' etc. Good to know there are some still taking advantage of the principles.

Anyway, back on topic, if these are in the condition they appear to be, they should provide a great listening experience and are a steal at the asking price. Buy them. I wish I could.

Thanks!  Heh, my wife calls them "Vornado speakers" because you get a coherent stereo image even while walking around the room.  Bose might have marketed "stereo everywhere" but these puppies deliver it full range, with authority.

I could part these out on ebay and make more for the raw drivers than what I'm asking.  But I'd rather pocket less cash than take equipment of this caliber out of commission.  Too much audio history winds up in landfills already.

Glad to put in a vote of confidence. I know what you mean about the drivers- they are made of unobtainium and no doubt would fetch a good price,

These look a little different than the ones I remember from my friend- IIRC his didn't have the inner screens over the mid & tweeter drivers with the Allison logo on them (neither did my CD-8s).

I hope you have an easy sale, as you should. Never had much luck with selling on here but I think my stuff wasn't quite 'hi-end' enough. YMMV of course,

I'm guessing it was a late-model change to prevent kids from poking in the driver's. I lifted this pic from one of the NOS midrange being sold on eBay:
