Tube amp to push the X-Statiks
« on: 27 Nov 2020, 12:13 am »
So I have been thinking about getting an entry level tube amp for my 2 channel system. I am looking at the elekit tu-8200 amplifier kit. This would be my first attempt at building and amp and my first tube anything.  Do you think 8 watts/ channel is enough to push the X-statics? I do have a pair of H frame dual servo subs that i will be using as well, so the amp will only be used with the X-Statiks.

It's less than ideal, but should work.

Thanks

What wattage rating should I be looking for?

I've used 12-15 watt amps with little issue.  Like I said, 8 should work.  You might contact Danny about modifying the crossover to drop off the bass a bit... would take some strain off the amp and let the servos do the heavy lifting.

This has about twice the power.

8 watts will "work," but eventually you will be longing for more.
I used to push X-Statik with 30 watt push-pull tube power, and that was about right, not too little or too much.

I agree that 30 watts of tubes is about the sweet spot for these speakers

Thanks everyone for the responses. I will do some more research. Its like everything else, you set a budget in your head and then you come to realized you going to have to spend twice the amount. :o

The first time I heard the Statiks they were driven by 300 w/ch solid state gear.  I was extremely impressed!

I’ve driven them with 18,35, 40, 60, and 140 watt tube amps and they sound great with all of them.  Consider the size of your room.  The bigger the room, the more power you’re going to want.

I agree with the others that your starting point should be 30 watts or so.  A VTA70 is a great tube amp to start with and highly recommended.

No need to modify the amp for bass frequencies.  All you need is to figure out a low pass filter cap based on the input impedance of the amp.  I believe the VTA70 is 270K.  It’s just a cap you put inline at the inputs of the amp.

For roughly the same price as the assembled VTA ST-70 I'd also give serious consideration to this one:

I've never heard it but I'd bet bux it sounds great.  I'm simply extrapolating based on Doge preamps, that have been available for awhile and have garnered great reviews.  And at 63 lbs for 60wpc this amp must be really built!

Plus, this reviewer seems pretty experienced and he owns some nice gear.

If too pricey, maybe the smaller brother at 40wpc and approx $1000?

Currently I have Folsom's TDA 7297 amp pushing 15-16 wpc.  I've got a pair of OB servo subs taking the lowest octave, and the combination is a good match.  I'll probably put in a custom Dodd 45 wpc in now that the weather has turned cooler.  I've also used a pair of 6bq5 mono that also worked well.  Honestly, the X-Statics are an easy pair of speakers to drive.
