Howdy from SLC

Hello all,

I'm restarting my journey in Hi-Fi after a 10 year hiatus.  I began my adventure (in the very early 2000s) in college when one of my fraternity brothers introduced me to his high end stereo which consisted of a pair of B&W 805s powered by a Bryston 3B SST and a Bryston preamp.  I remember the feeling of "hearing music for the first time".

After researching what was in my budget I ended up with a Sony Ta-e9000es preamp, Emotiva LPA-1 amp and a pair of Onix Rocket RS750s.  To my untrained ear I thought the system sounded great and I enjoyed many hours of listening.  Around 2010 I started moving around for work, living in smaller places or apartments and didn't have the space (or the right place) to use the stereo so it has sat dormant in storage for a decade.  In fact it is still in storage in Tx.  I now have a house that where I can set a nice stereo up and not annoy the neighbors.

I toyed with the idea of buying a budget level integrated amp like the Cambridge AXR100 or IotaVX SA3 to pair with a set of Klipsch/Elac/Jamo/etc floorstanders but for less than the cost buying new I imagine I can have my 9000es/LPA-1/rs750s shipped to my new home in Utah.  It's probably worth revisiting the components that got me started in hi fi, and I look forward to hearing it again.

I have no idea where to start on shipping the towers as the original boxes and packing materials are long gone.  If anyone has some advice to shipping towers cross country I'd love to hear it.

Thanks y'all!

Looking forward to learning about the new trends and seeing some contemporary systems, I have a lot of catching up to do.

Welcome back into audio!

UPS/FedEx would probably box them up for a price, but what shape they'll arrive in would be in question.  Do you have any trusted friends in TX that could box up your gear?  Yellow Freight, etc. could handle bigger/heavier boxes.  Years ago I commissioned floor standing loudspeakers from over 800 miles away.  Ended up picking them up on a family vacation a few months after they were done (had to rent a U-haul).

In ten years digital has gone almost completely to streaming.  Open baffle loudspeakers have gained popularity around here, but the leading edge loudspeaker designs have gone into wave guide (shallow horn) for controlled directivity and active design (sophisticated/digital low voltage crossover feeding one channel of amplification per driver) for all around better performance.  Active design follows what professional studios have been doing for decades.  Another trend is understanding the importance of the listening environment (size, shape, insulation, setup, treatments).  Setup includes the value of having separate bass and mid/treble locations (multiple carefully placed subwoofers in corners or midway along walls).

JLM, thanks for the info.  I'll have to look into the freight option as well as opposed to fedex/ups.  What I mostly hope to avoid is having to *make* boxes to fit the speakers, that sounds like a headache.

I'm curious to learn more about streaming and it's place in hi-fi, I'm sure there's plenty of reading here I can do on that subject.  My college buddy had a number to treatments in his room to improve the sound, but that's not something I ever played with.  I will be doing so this time around.
