Everything old is new again!
« on: 8 Dec 2019, 09:57 pm »
I stumbled onto this site when googling Signet tk5ae. I didn't even know it existed.

I am a member of several hi-fi sites and notice each has an emphasis. Some in music, some in equipment, and some in types of equipment.

I sold hi-fi in the Seattle area between 1976 and 1982 before entering IT. One of the guys I used to work with STILL works at Definitive Audio on Roosevelt.

Though I have a lot of information stored in my brain, most of it is dated, since I re-entered the hobby a couple of decades ago and, after moving to a "hobby farm" in central KY, a lot of my time is spent on outdoor activities, clearing trails, etc. So I'm still all about vintage. It means I can tell some stories (whether or not they are interesting is up to the reader) and I can offer advice based on old wisdom. But much of this is new to me.

Looking forward to getting into the fray.

My avatar is of the first "good" system I ever owned, though that photo was yanked off the internet. I built it all from kits. I was around 19 at the time and it was a lot of fun. It was Dynaco 400 amp, Pat5 Preamp, and I forget the tuner name.

Welcome!

It's a great time to be into audio.  Digital is so cool and if done right super convenient.  Speakers have gotten better with tighter bass and features like controlled directivity and active design.  And so much has gotten smaller/less expensive.

I built Hafler pre/power amps and Fried transmission line bass cabinets kits in 1980.  It was a high water mark in my audio adventures and the total span of my DIY career.

Welcome Not Insane. I just found this site myself a few days ago. Bought my first "nice" system in 1979. Back in the day when there was a nice stereo store every few miles. I remember the "go to" song that would be played when auditioning speakers etc.......Steely Dan's Aja. Still love that song.

Not Insane is a rather bold claim in 2019. We shall see if you can walk that talk in 2020.

  :D

OK, seriously now welcome to AudioCircle. Actually very welcome as the words ‘Dynaco’ and ‘Signet’ instantly bring back warm fuzzy feelings of one of hi-fi’s golden ages. Your cited years of 1976 to 1982 I recall as when every college freshman showed up with a stereo for the dorm room. Typically AR, JBL, EPI 2-ways with 8” woofers powered by a Japanese receiver or in my case Marantz 1060 integrated amp. Add a Dual or Pioneer turntable and we are ready to spin some Who, Led Zep, ‘Floyd, or Yes.

Keep at the hi-fi thing and discover in the classified ads of Audio magazine the ‘underground’ mags. Small format with irregular publishing dates it was in Stereophile and The Absolute Sound we first learned of exotica like a little company in Minneapolis, MN where some guy named William Z. Johnson was still making tube amplifiers and preamplifiers.

The good news is I firmly believe the 2020’s will be another golden age, while navigating this bright future remembering the past is the rudder I use to steady the course.
