I have a Denon 2910 DVD player and I have a 75 ohm interconnect from it to the coax digital audio input DVD connection on my SP 1.7.  Whenever I play a disc the readout says the audio source is analog.  I can't figure out what I need to do.  Do I have to specifically assign an input to my DVD, anything else I need to think about?  Thanks for any help, Kevin

HI Kevin,

Make sure your DVD player is outputting a digital signal.

Hi James, I should have mentioned that the discs I am playing are recorded in Dolby Digital, and at the front of the player the Dolby LCD is lit.  Anything I need to think about with the preamp.  I don't need to specifically assign coax digital inputs do I?  Kevin

Try using the digital coax only connection for your DVDp.  Then see if you toggle between digital and analog via remote.  It should work.

Check whether your connections are solild.  I have the previous models (i.e. Denon 2900, and SP1, using an AudioQuest VSD-1 0.5m cable), and had a similar problem.  All I got was analog even though the DVD player said it was outputting digital.  I played around with the audio setting of the DVD player and the setting of the SP, to no avail.  I even disconnected the analog cables which got no sound at all (red led on the digital front panel).
Well, I then put on my headlamp from REI so I could see behind my rack, and fiddled with the digital cable, and when fiddling with the connection to the DVD player, I heard the click of the relay and digital sound, on and off as I wiggled the cable.  I then disconnected and reconnected the connector to my DVD player and now it passes the signal just fine.  So, make sure things your connections are solid, not sure why it was not connected well.  The 'high-end' cables tend to have more solid connectors so they take a little more to get fully seated.

You could try toggling between digital and analogue input with the "DIG" button on the remote a couple of times. I sometimes have this problem with my Sky+ box, but switching to and fro a couple of times usually wakes it up.

Edit: Oh, and also make sure you don't have an optical digital input assigned to the DVD input - if I recall correctly, assigning an optical input to (say) DVD causes the coax inout to be disabled.

Good point - nicolasb - the Optical would override the COAX in.

Thanks everyone for your help.  I am certain that the DVD is putting out a digital signal, and I'm not using either of the Toslink connections.  Will try to ensure I have a firm connection with my coax cable.  I have tried toggling the dig. button on the SP remote to no avail.  I also posted a message a while ago about getting no sound at times and seeing a NO CLOCK message on the LCD of the 1.7.  Again I tried toggling the dig. button on the remote, eventually I either had to turn the processor on and off or hit the 2 ch bypass button.  Appreciate everyone's help.  Kevin

Hi,

You do not have to be using the toslink for it to be assigned to the DVD input. Just check to make sure in the menu of the SP1.7 the Toslink has not been assigned to the CD input.

Hi James, you nailed it.  The optical inputs had been preassigned, one to CD and one to DVD.  I switched them to none and voila problem solved.  Thanks so much.  I'd actually like to discuss some background with you about my specific unit and how this happened, not appropriate in this forum.  You can e-mail me at mashthepedal@telus.net and will fill you in.  Thanks again for making such a great product and for being so helpful with owners like me.  Kevin

Well to be fair I think I should get some small credit ----- I did realize that you needed to check your settings even though you were not using the toslink.
