I added up the retail cost of the equipment from his Audiogon posting and it totals $262,700.

Anyone else find that room cold and lonely?  What's the use in enjoying music if you can't enjoy it with someone?  It looks positively sterile to me.

Yeah i agree.. The fact that there is only that one chair there adds to its loneliness.

I suspect he has more chairs available. He mentioned several times that he likes to have friends over to listen and also that he wanted his wife more involved.

...Colors are really depressing, though.  A truly beige nightmare there...

this reminds me of a yoke i know:

what's the difference between a whore, a lover, & a wife?
-the whore sez: "faster, faster!"
-the lover sez: "oooooh... slower, slower!"
-the wife sez: "beige...  hmmmm i think i'll paint the ceiling beige..."

Mike Lavigne's  house is not far from where I live.  He invited me over to hear his old system - maybe I'll ask for an invite to hear his new one.   :)

Wow!!!  I love that room.  Can you imagine, no neigbours, turn it up as loud as you want.   I don't find it cold, and I generally like some solitude when listening to music.

The ONLY thing I woud change is add larger windows to enjoy the fantastic view (I know, windows are supposed to be a no-no for audio rooms, i still don't care :)

I'm with Ravi on this one.  I love that room and have looked at it before.  When I saw the picture, I recognized it immediately.  Very cool looking room and amazing system.  I suspect it sounds pretty good.  This guy spared no expense.   I wonder if he has the ability to do in room measurements?

I love all the criticism coming from people who have never met Mike or heard the room.  Seeing some of the rooms here on this board, I'm especially astounded by the negative reaction.

He's a great guy, and has a love for this hobby.  His room was designed by one of the best in the industry.  Would be hard to pick holes in the design unless you have some serious acoustic credentials.

Seriously, give it up guys.

And yes, he has additional chairs.  I have friends who have been over there.

He buys as I recall like 20-30 cds a week, and his music collections dwarfs ANYBODY's on this board.

I can't wait to hear his room personally....

Then again, perhaps he should have listened to all of you guys for his room---LOL!

oh yeah, btw that chair is a NASA approved ergonomic chair.    i would HIGHLY doubt that being a high back chair impacts his sound, considering Rives knew that going in.

i believe he said he has listened to over 12 hours in that thing with no discomfort

that's certainly a nice room, but not what i'd do, if i had the means...  first, i agree w/the negative aspects about the solitude of it all.  second, i wouldn't want any hard surfaces behind the 1st reflection point of the speakers.  in this room, there's a hard floor, windows, & that bowed wall.  i'd want all that covered.  if i were gonna have any hard surfaces, it would be *behind* me.  third, i would not want my equipment basically out in front of one speaker like that.  in this case, there is so much  ...

Rives doesn't believe in live end/dead end systems.

Room acoustics change with size and shape.  I read lots about absorption here on AC, but little about diffusion or other means to treat rooms.

Most here would agree that audio is too lonely of a hobby.

Not the way I'd spend $500K, but its his to spend.

I'm building my own room, hope it strikes a better balance between geeky, sounding good, and being inviting.

I agree with KeithR.  There was obviously a lot of thought that went into the design of the room.  I guess its fair to be critical, but I would have a hard time believing that anyone would turn down a chance to listen to that system, much less own it.

The article was also a really interesting read.  I got the impression that to Mike this was more than a hobby, but a serious part of his life.  He sought out experts and made decisions based on his own habits so that function and form were both addressed in the design.  CD Player right next to your chair, build in CD/LP racks, under floor cable runs, in wall piping for turntable air hose. . .etc.  That's a little more involved than a few echo busters and bass traps.  I also liked the fact that he mentioned multi channel in the article since it showed that he's looking forward, not just staying put.

I'd pay to hear it given the chance.

That is quite obvious from the photos but who said anything about his personality?

Yeah, you people should be ashamed for expressing an opinion!  Next time, ask first.

I bet that every person who has commented about this looking like a "lonely" room doesn't have kids.  I would LOVE to have a room that I could lock myself in and just listen to music for a couple of hours at some volume other than "low".

And I'm betting the room sounds awesome.  In addition to being a fan of Kharma and Tenor gear, I've met the Rives folks, and they do know what they're doing...

I'm with Nathan on this one. What negative reactions are you talking about Keith? The only things people have commented on is  that they don't like beige, it looks a little lonely with only one chair in there, and someone commented on the height of the back of the chair. Most reactions were like mine : WOW! I myself am going to try and see if I can see/hear his room next time I am near Seattle.
