Please help with SP1.7 Problem
« on: 9 Jan 2005, 10:07 pm »
Hello everybody, I have stumbled across this excellent looking forum while trying to find an answer to my problem. I hope someone can help me!

Has anyone tried feeding an SP1.7 digital signal via Perpetual Technologies little P-1A ?

I have taken a Bryston SP1.7 on loan having given back an MC-12B which I did not like. I enjoy my SST power amps so hope the 1.7 is for me also. Anyway, for Digital Music listening, I use a DVD32R transport, the Perpetual Technologies P-1A upsampler, and then the digital input into a processor. Ultimately I will be getting a Dan Wright Sig2 P-3A but thats another subject.

Anyway in the mean time, I have a small problem with this combination. If I set the sample rate on the P-1A to 96Khz, the display on the Bryston correctly shown the incoming signal as this, but there is no music, only a nasty pink noise. If the sample rate is set as 44 or 48, these numbers are also correctly shown and the music is fine. I have tried experimenting also with the bit density but it doesn't make any difference at the 96Khz rate. At the two lower sample rates, I can output the full 24bits without problem, but nothing at 96 seems to work.

Is something faulty or is there a reason why this would not work ? Does anyone know enough about the SP1.7's internals to be able to offer an explanation why this should or shouldn't work ?

I have this working fine with my old AV32R and the borrowed MC12-B.

Thanks and Regards,
Steve.

HI TT9,

What version of software do you have in the SP1.7 or give me the serial number.

Hello James,

Thankyou kindly for taking the time to repsond.

The firmware is verison 41 I believe. This is the message I get from the display upon startup. I have not checked the serial as is all nicely in rack but if essential I can unplug and look for you.

May I ask you something else as well ? If I stop my dvd player, and then open the tray to remove the disk, there is a very audible 'pop' sound from the speakers. I have searched previous posts and believe this was an identified problem ?

Also can I just add that I am very pleased with this machine. I have a 4BSST and 9BST, and PMC OB1's actually so I think I will be ordering my SP1.7 when my demo unit has to go back. Is so much more musical than the Lexicon, I thank you.

Best,
Steve.

Hi Steve,

The 41 is quite old so the new software (44D) will solve the issues you have been having.

Thanks for your positive comments regarding the sound of the SP1.7. I get about 2 callers a week telling me that they had such-and-such a processor in their system - replaced it with the SP1.7 and can not believe the increase in quality of sound.

Hello TT9,

I have auditioned a Lexicon MC12b in my home and Bryston SP1.7 clearly sounded more transparent in 2ch by-pass mode.  The pop you are hearing possibly is coming from the source.  I would try a different source and see if the "pop" is still there.  If so, James already has a solution for you.  You will need a high quality Robertson bit.  The aluminium fasteners are easy to strip.

I'd agree - I mushed up the head of one of the screws on my SP1.7 when attempting to upgrade mine to 44D. I'm still wondering what to do about it.

If I can get to the Bristol HiFi show here in the UK at the end of Feb I'll see if I can chat up the PMC guys and see if they might take it off me and see what they can do - I'm a bit scared at what they might charge though.

Coincidently it was to avoid the same pop that I was attempting to upgrade my unit.

Enjoy the SP1.7 - it is a fine pievce of kit.

Cheers,

John

HI John,

You need a"Green Handle Robertson" screw driver to get the screw out.

Guys,

Thank you all for your support and advice on this thread. I have decided definitely to purchase a new SP1.7 and have informed my local dealer to start the wheels turning with PMC and acquire me a new one.

Those years ago (about 3) when I bought my AV32R, nice machine it was and gave me lots of listening pleasure, if I'd slackened my wallet only a little bit more and gone for the Bryston then at that time I would have saved myself this whole merry-go-round. .  :P

Anyway, I definitely feel I am moving up onto a higher audio plane, so it's all got a happy ending.

Best,
Steve.

One last thing please. For my curiosity, would anyone have a link or some documents which details the changes and additional features between each of the software versions between say 41 -> 44D. Am interested to see.

Best,
Steve.
