Congrats Brian!  Roger Gordon's review is in PFOnline's Issue 16.  Oh.....spoiler here....he likes them!

Edit:  I assume this is news.  I visited PFOnline just a couple days ago and didn't see it.  Maybe I'm late to the dance, here, but oh well, it's a great review.

Nice review of the RM30's !!!...but.... a quote from the review.....

Footnote: www.vmpsaudio.com is the official VMPS website. It is horribly out of date, though an extensive update has been promised. If you want current information, try www.vmpseurope.com or the VMPS portion of the audio manufacturers section of www.audiocircle.com, where official price lists, pictures, and other useful information are posted.

I have also added the review to the "stickies".

Roger is a regular poster here on AudioCircle and has a VMPS "DREAM SYSTEM".

DeHavilland 845 Monoblocs with RM30s and a LARGER sub for low end duties.

WOW!!! :o

Hope he doesn't mind if I post the picture of it from the PF online.

Roger, look forward to meeting you at one of our get togethers at Mad DOg's place.

Sweet System, and GREAT Review!! by the way.

Roger just let me know that his system has changed a bit, as seen below:

I see another Eagle amp :thumb:

Is that for the woofer sections in the RM30s??

Again...What a SYSTEM :notworthy:

Yes congrats.  BTW, what are the Eagle amps, not sure if I had seen them mentioned before?

I too was curious and found that:

They are Electron Kinetics (John Iverson) Eagle 400 solid state monoblocs

I initially thought they were "stereo", but they are monoblocs.

This then would substantiate Shokunin's supposition that they are to power each driver of the LARGER sub.

I found quite interesting that the author of the review prefers the RM30 over the RM/X:

Quote

This was due to the narrower cabinet. Less width means less diffraction and better sound, and in fact, the $3499 RM30Ms sounded better than either the $4999 RM40s or the $11,900 RM/Xs in the same room with the same electronics

Yes, the Eagles are for the subwoofer only.  400 watts per channel.  The amps have a cult following with the cognoscenti believing the Eagle amps are amongst the top three subwoofer amps in the world.  Not having tried all the amps in the world, I can't comment.  However, the RM30Ms and the Larger are a marriage made in heaven.

Are you using the sub in stereo mode?  (In other words, driving one woofer with the right signal and another woofer with the left signal.)

As for the RM30s being better than the RM-Xs, I'd have to hear that for myself.

Roger,

What are the dimensions of your listening room?

In answer to CTVIGGEN's question, the Larger has dual voice coils.  Thus, you have two sets of binding posts instead of the normal one set.  So you can input a stereo signal.

In answer to K3s question, my room has approximately 3,544 cubic feet of volume.  The left side of the room opens onto a hallway, a stairway and another room so acoustic energy gets bled off into those regions as well.

I know that the larger has two inputs.  I was wondering if you're using the sub in stereo mode or mono mode.  You could split a mono signal between both amps and use each amp to drive a woofer.  In this case, you'd be using the sub in mono mode.

Bob,

How do you use a single sub in stereo mode?

If you send the left to one woofer and the right to the other woofer, I don't think that would be stereo.

i have 2 sets of outs on my tempest pre amp-one set used for mains and the other set of outs run my vmps large-i call it stereo :lol:i also use 2 mono blocks(odyssey) for sub duty-

i also dont think the large has dual vcoils-one pair binding posts are for each speaker-

Ok, some of these questions might seem remedial, but I'll ask anyway.

The only negative is that it is beamy. Two people sitting side by side, ten feet back from the speakers, can enjoy the sweet spot, but if you stand up, you lose the highs.

Was the perceived "beaminess" different from the RM40s?  My assumption is that it would be slightly more so due to the reduced baffle size which should reduce the sonic dispersion.

Ability to play loud: In my medium-sized room, the system will play loud enough to drive my wife out of the house, and louder than I can stand.
Quote
There are drawbacks. They cannot play as loud or fill as large a room with sound as their bigger brothers, the RM40s and RM/Xs...However, if you have a small to medium-size room and don't need sound pressure levels that will make your ears bleed...

Does this pertain strictly to the bass output or just the general ability of the speaker to envelope you with sound due to the additional ribbons  found in the RM40/RM/X.

Thanks.

KJ,

I don't really know what "beaminess" is but have never experienced it.

I think you are correct on the bass and output level of the 40 vs 30's.

Your room would have to be quite large for the RM-30's not to fill it with blessed sound. My room is 22 by 15 wide and 8.5 ht and it fills it to the hilt!!!

As with most speakers as you stand you will lose some of the highs. I find this funny though. This has been a topic of discussion for sometime now. Are people really standing around listening  for long periods of time???? I mean when I kick out my "air guitar" or dance around :guitar:  :hyper: But otherwise the "sweet" spot is the place to be. Even my wife likes it there ......heh that did not come out right!!

I really feel as stated before the the price point this is the best speaker made. Imaging is unreal and most think my center speaker is on(when listening in stereo) as the sound just jets out from the center to you. Midrange and highs are excellent and with a larger sub or the like you have a complete package for music or movies...or course adding some ribbon dipoles or surrounds does not hurt either.

Probably not the best word to describe it.  I'm referring to the rate of dispersion and whether it is so narrow that standing up makes you feel like the sound disappeared.  The best example I can provide is the difference between listening to VMPS speakers with and without the FST.

In my case, yes.  I don't have a dedicated listening room nor do I always feel like sitting down for "critical listening."  Sometimes, I just want to enjoy music while working in the general vicinity.  I don't want to feel as if I need to wait for a commercial to leave my chair because the sound will disappear.

I understand that the ultimate listening enjoyment will take place in the sweet spot.  If that's what I'm game for during the day, then that's where I'll sit.  If I just want to listen to music while cleaning, paying bills, chasing the reindeer that ran over Grandma, well then...
