I guess the real "wishful thinking" question is...in case of a problem how does one retrofit the the BCD-3s drive to fit in the BCD-1.... 
One way to rebuild a BCD-1 is to look at the drive inside and find a CD player that uses that exact same drive and buy it for parts. I don't remember the exact designation but I do remember some German-made Technics players used it. Your best bet is to find out which drive was used by Bryston and find a service manual for the appropriate Technics model.
Cheaper drives like these usually include digital servo controllers on-board and are connected to the main board via ribbon cable so this should be a relatively simple task for someone into who's into electronics.
If MiniDisc recorders can be restored this way, CD players can be too since they're far less complicated.
Unless of course, Bryston did something to that drive to make it perform differently to suit their needs. That's a question for the designer.
