EVS Millenium DAC

Has anyone ever heard this unit?  I read the designer is highly regarded, started out modding MSB Links before deciding to design his own no holds barred DAC.  Just curious how it would stack up against the usual suspects.

I never heard any reasons why Ric discontinued the Millenium DAC, but he seems to be focusing on modding SACD players now.

There's still a good deal of info on the DAC on Ric's site--

The Millenium is being replaced by an improved model with upsampling, a FET output stage and a few other tweaks.  It's going to be a few hundred dollars more, however.

Rob,
Are you sure a new Millenium is coming out?
Last time I talked to Rick (a few weeks ago) he made no mention of working on DAC's anymore.  A while ago he told me he not going to make any more DAC's because he could mod the new SACD players to sound better than his DAC's, for less money, so there was no point.

Didn't know that, I was just going by what was on the web site.  But that would seem kinda short sighted, since there's probably a thousand redbook discs for ever SACD in existance.  Unless he means the redbook playback from the modded SACD is better than his custom DACs, which seems unlikely.

No biggie, really.  There's plenty of good DACs out there.  I was just curious.

I do believe he quit making the Millenium because he believed he could mod SACD players to sound as good or better with redbook, and also because it means less jitter issues and no digital cable.

However, currently on his site, he mentions new products in the works, which include speakers and a "universal transport / DAC combo".  Does that mean a universal DAC that will convert DVD-A and SACD?

The Millennium II DAC has been discontinued for almost one year.  I am currently modding Pioneer and Philips DVD/SACD players.  I am now a dealer for several products among them is the Universal DAC/transport combo from Audiosynthesis.  Normally, I would prefer a single box system for best sound.  But the audiosynthesis system is revolutionary in design and tied together with double glass cables for super low jitter.  See DNaudio for more info on the Audiosynthesis DAX Discrete.  I will have more info on my website: http://www.tweakaudio.com very soon.

Thanks for the reply and welcome to AC.  I'm sorry to hear the about the Millenium; it's nice to be able to choose your transport and mate it to the DAC.  I'll definately be keeping an eye on future developements, and EVS is already in my Windows Favorites!

I owned the EVS DAC 1 which was sold as a DAC that would evolve and upgraded as technology allowed. When Ric " discontinued"  his DAC's his customers who bought into his philosophy got left holding the bag.
I will admit that Ric is a talented designer , but he needs to upgrade his business acumen before he upgrades any other products.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could all know the future so that any decision we ever made would be set in stone. However, digital technology keeps changing faster than what we can ever know, so that when a manufacturer says something and means it, it does not mean it will come to pass, nor that it would be the best thing for his customers.....

Dacs are increasingly becoming obsolete (in my opinion) and the ones that will survive, will be the ones that are trully bargains, wild tubed jobbies, or Universal types.....All cheaper receivers and integrated amps have built-in DACs.   This leaves only the 2 channel audiophile that MAY want one...

It became clear to me that a modified one box player could be made to sound better than most DACs, so that my customers would be better served by modded players than by trying to make a continuously evolving and upgradable DAC.

I decided to stop upgrading the $625 Millennium I to a $1050 Millennium II because it did not make sense to me nor to most of my other customers....You were the only one who wanted it upgraded after I had decided not to, the only one (that I know about)....After you posted your dismay on the web, I decided that I would upgrade yours (hey I never want anyone to be unhappy) and a few others, since I had the parts for about 6 upgrades here.  However, it appeared to me that you then decided that I was no longer worthy of your business, so you did not take me up on my offer and the fact remains that no one else thereafter wanted the upgrade, no one.  So, I never upgraded another DAC, even after the anouncement that I would do a few.

Some of us hold on to the past.  I hope you can let it go.

I wish you well.
