Would think that once the caps were decided on, the binding posts could be removed and the caps
soldered in place ?  :dunno: Removing the binding posts and soldering directly to the board should improve on sound quality.

Just a thought...

Yeah, I'm sure a solder straight through the signal line is better than a binding post.  But, this reminds me of a certain preamp manufacturer who got angry that people would roll tubes, since he spent so much time finding the "perfect" tubes for the preamp.

I remember thinking, yeah, that's great, if you want to do that at my house with my amps, my speakers, my room, my ears, and my taste, and tell me what the perfect tube compliment is, then OK.  I won't roll tubes.

It's really smart giving us the flexibility.  Because sometimes it's not a matter of better or best, it's a matter of different systems and different tastes.  And sometimes new caps come out that are game changers.  In the grand scheme of an expensive system, trying out new caps (even expensive ones) is not that expensive given the changes they can make for better or worse.  Look at the price of cables.

This is a really good idea.

Guys,

Don't you think it's time to split this thread into two?

Don't get me wrong. I'm keenly interested in both DACs, and I want to learn more about each one, but it would be much better if the MP-D2 conversation took place in its own thread, no?

I'm not the facilitator here - just another poster.

Michael, that's why I aim low (don't chase the latest high priced technology) when it comes to DAC's.  When buying DAC's try to get as much or more use/enjoyment out of it as it depreciates and consider yourself satisfied.

Ain't that the truth! Nothing depreciates faster than digital technology. They are about as long-lived as desktop computers.

I'll start a new thread when I get th MP-D2. It's scheduled to be delivered next Tuesday, it's in LA now, on the way to Seattle.

Their translation software is horrible.  :duh:

I was rushed when I posted the first part. What is the meaning of 2 pcs vs 4 pcs? Does this refer to dual or quad chips? (Haven't read the description in detail yet).

Still trying to figure this one out. Is that a big volume knob on the front? Remote?

Just got mine today. :) I believe its the bypassable volume control. I'm bypassing it to a Tortuga LDR pre. The silver button to the left of the little LEDs is the input selector.

OK,OK...give me a couple of days. I knocked my pinky out of joint so my  typing has suffered. Also, I have been waiting for upgrade tubes to arrive. One thing for sure, the MP-D2 is a substantial upgrade over my other DAC.

I've actually circled back to the factory supplied 6H6 tubes and now appreciate how good they really are.  The "little brother" to the 6H30 that is popular with ARC and BAT amongst others.  In fact I tried the same 6H30 tubes that ARC uses in their preamps and thought they were horrible.  Of the dozen or so sets of input tubes I have tried the 6H30's were the worst. Shrill and thin with emphasis on the two frequency extremes at the expense of the mid-range.  Interested to see what you think about your replacements.

Yes, the factory tubes are getting better with burn in. I'll be receiving some Amperex orange globe 6dj8 in a couple of days. The vendor replaced the faulty tube in my first order with a new pair no questions asked. My faith in Ebay has been restored. :thumb:

new Musical Paradise MP-D2 thread
http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=148213.msg1585408#new
Maybe I'm missing something here, but what does the MP DAC (which uses an AKM DAC) have to do with this thread on DACs with the ES9038PRO?
