Recommendations for a small sub?
« on: 16 Nov 2016, 04:15 pm »
I need a good, physically small sub for an office area. The office itself is 12 x 12 but the actual space for the sub is small. Any recommendations? The smaller the better ... maybe.
Best,
Lester

I don't know what you consider large, but look into Gallo CLS 10.   Unsure about availability -- they were being closed out over the summer for about $500.  Fast musical sub that keeps up nicely with my quick Omega Super 7 XRS mk2 speakers.  Nicely adjustable, doesn't overload my 10 x 11 room.

EDIT:   a nice feature of this sub is that high-level hookup (ie. amp connection with speaker cables) allows high-passing (fixed at 100 hz) to you mains if you choose to, relieving them of low bass duty.  Better purity, naturalness and ease.  Of course, you can also run mains full range.

Here's one I'm considering for a similar area:  Sumiko Sub Zero  Dimensions (WxHxD)
9.65x10.8x11 in.

I really like my Totem Kin mini subs. I run one in each corner in my music room.

Been on a similar quest, but want a "real" subwoofer (in-room F3 = 20 Hz).  Cheapest/smallest I could find was SVS SB-1000 ($499, 13.5" x 13" x 14", F3 = 24Hz) and Rythmik L12 ($539, 14" x 14" x 15.5", F3 = 18 Hz).  Either should be good quality pieces, especially the Rythmik.

Note they would hook up to speakers with F3 = 42 Hz, so why bother with a "sub" that is only rated down to 35 Hz?

I use dual 10" Martin Logan Original Dynamo's with my Magnepan 1.6's.  The newer Dynamo 700 is comparable.  It is small in size and packs a punch.  Very musical tight and controlled bass.  It is non ported.  They can be found on ebay for good prices.  There is an original dynamo on ebay for $185. 700's are going for about $300-400 used.  They sold for $650 years ago.  They supposedly go down to 24hz but 27 is more realistic.   They are about 11x12".

A smaller but more expensive options are the amazing TBI subs such as the Magellan VI su ($800, 14.5" x 14.5" x 7", F3 = 20 Hz, but are passive so a power amp is required).

Check out James subs with either the 10" or 12" woofer.   Excellent sound in a compact enclosure.  Read up on the reviews and see for yourself.

Unfortunately not cheap or well known.

Thank you all, great suggestions. Right now I'm leaning towards the REL T Zero as a starting place but the others are certainly attractve and within the realm of possibilities. Bflex, I too will be matching the sub to the Harbeth C7ES3s.

Cheers,
Lester
