BVAudio SR10 or other to help Jolida JD100A
« on: 16 Nov 2004, 07:04 pm »
Anyone have any experience with this device?  I'm specifically looking for something that will open up and improve presence of the highs from my Jolida JD100.  The manufacturer has said the SR10 would improve the highs and more due to the 100A having very high output impedance (47kohm). Says this is a common problem of tube designs, the high frequency (transients) are either lost due to output transformers or high output unit impedance.  I'm currently running the JD 100 into a Krell HTS7.1 and then into a Sunfire Sig 600x2.  The tubes in the Jolida are ElectroHarmonix.  Unit has limited hours on it and I'm not sure how sonics will change as it breaks in.  Any input on the SR10 or other thoughts would be welcome.  Help a newbie out?  Thanks.

Hi, my suggestion would be to let the unit settle down for a while, and then try some different tubes. The 47k ohm output impedance spec will be a misprint I expect, it probably means that the manufacturer recommends a 47k input impedance on your preamp.

You may also want to try a short, low-capacitance cable between the CD player and the preamp thingy. If you can solder you can make one in a few minutes using magnet wire, otherwise other members may have recommendations.

I echo the comments relative to burning in the unit first, and you might as well us the EH tubes to help do that before engaging in tube rolling.

My personal opinion is that the Sylvania Gold Label JHS 5751WA triple mica blackplates absolutely make the Jolida sing in my system. (I note I've rolled a number of tubes in the Jolida, my AGon link shows some of those tubes.) I think these tubes, when they can be found NOS/NIB, are going for about $150-160/pair.

I also use a cryoed Chris VenHaus Flavor 1 PC. Although the positive improvements it made in the lower registers were most noticeable, the sound from the Jolida seemed to improve across the frequency spectrum. Blacker background, etc. Chris VH has a 30 day money back guarantee, too, so one can test and return if the results are not to one's liking.

One last note, I feel using Walker SST on the IEC prongs, PC prongs, tube pins, RCAs, etc, also made distinct improvements. If you choose to use this product, please carefully follow Mr. Walker's instructions. SST runs about $70/jar, and there's enough it seems to treat a hundred or more systems (I subsequently treated my speaker cables and then rest of my gear.) [There's also Super SST or some such thing that recently came out, it cost more and I haven't tried it.] I personally feel the Walker lets one hear what the component has to offer, and I won't think about upgrading any gear until it's had the SST treatment and then been revisited.

Best of luck in your choices. I know there are units that can give more than the JD-100, but I haven't heard one at the unit's price/performance point (+ Sylvania 5751s + SST + VH PC).

Thanks for the input and info on the Sylvania's, I may need to try those in the future.  Oddly, Chris recommended the Flavor 4 for the Jolida and that's what I have on it now.  We'll keep giving it some time and see how it goes, it's better since this original post.

Greetings, I think what you saw was the output voltage at 47k ohms. Should have looked something like this <2V / 47 kohms.

Most tube players like to see 47k-100k input impedance on preamps or integrated units.

As far as opening the unit up (sonically) to your preferences as mentioned, do not install damping material to it. Instead, throw 3 brass cones under the chassis, 2 in the rear and one up front under the transport. You will be surprised of the benefits this will offer. I like the Audio Points but there are other options available. Just make sure they are solid brass and not a composit of metals. The ones from Parts Express work "okay" but these are far too heavy to perform as cones should and obviously not 100% brass. When it comes to cones, think of Dead Weight as Dark Sound.

For tubes, the EH are nice pieces and I have found good luck with the Svetlana and Sovtek LPS.

Report back after 100 hours of playing time.
