Plugging Rear Speaker Port only Half Way ?
«

Hey all, so I've found I like my rear ported bookshelf speakers with only 1\2 the port tube plugged. I folded down a kinda thick piece of material (thin running sock folded in half) so it only fills half the port. I find this sounds better than port fully plugged or totally unplugged. I have to fold the sock down a bit on the inside so it does not vibrate out.
Wondering if you guys can think of a better way to do this. A more acoustically adjustable material or something ? Has to be fold-able so I can fold it down to keep from vibrating out and only plugs 1/2 the diameter of the port. I have seen where people have used tube, some hollow and some solid in the ports, to do this. Any ideas on that method also ?
Thanks guys

On my KEF LS50s, they supply a full port plug, and then one that is the same material and OD, but with a hole in it.
Maybe you could try some of that black closed cell pipe insulation, with the proper OD and ID, to get the open area you need.

You can also try stuffing the port with drinking straws or some sort of fibrous material that won't completely block the port.
The changes to the port lowers the tuning frequency of the cabinet so the bass starts rolling off sooner but tapers off more gradually. If you block the port entirely you seal the cabinet and this has more of an effect but it also increases woofer excursion and reduces lf output.
