For an armboard you're almost always safer with a quasi laminate, IMO.  I use epoxy to combine things like acrylic and hardwood ply.   Corian should be a good choice.  I'd put a layer of MDF underneath.  If you vary the ratio of epoxy to hardener,  you can make the glue harder or more compliant.  In this case you might want it a little softer.

Or try bonding 2 x 1/2" pieces of Corian together to make a 1" thick armboard.

Motor issue solved.  The Chinese (Jasmine) unit arrived and works fine.  The original is definitely NOT a Jasmine, much heavier and 24V versus 12V.  The tonearm mount moves up the project list by one spot
