Replacement tubes?
« on: 2 Mar 2016, 10:47 pm »
Hello,

My apologies if this has already been discussed to death ...

Here is a tube replacement question from a true tube newbie -so please bear with me. I need to buy a replacement tube, a Philips ECG JAN / 5687WB-PHILIPS. Would someone recommend preferred tube dealers? Do I also need to replace the matching tube in the other monoblock even though that amp is working just fine.

Can I trust Ebay sales?

And one online source offered 'standard' testing as part of the purchase price and 'matching testing' for an additional $4. What is the difference between standard and matching?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Lester

  • To whom more was given more will be required.
    • Never go to a psychiatrist, adopt a straycat or dog. On the street they live only two years average.

When I needed Ebay Custumer Service staff they dont stand by the seller cause it already pass 30 days, the buyer has only 30 days to fill a claim, if you can find the complaint screen form on the site.

The Ebay site is done confusingly purposefully to be almost impossible to open a claim.

Also once you open a claim at Paypal site you no more will be able to open a claim in the ebay site.

In the 'standard' testing the tube broker test only emission level, short circuit etc if you are lucky.
The matching testing is not a test, it is a comparison amongst various tube amissions levels to pickup 2 or 4 tubes w/similar performance.

You can buy from members in good standing, but make sure they list test results and do not just say they test good. You need a tube tester so you can learn and know when a tube is failing. Many times I have seen Ebay prices cost more than dealers.

I have a good friend who has a rating on Audiogon of 789 who has excellent knowledge and has numerous tubes who may be able to help you out. If you are interested, send me a PM and I will give you his email address so you can deal direct. He is an Audiophile, not a dealer.

Welcome to tubes!

I can second Upscale Audio. Also, there are other reputable tube dealers and there is a whole thread in the Tube-o-phile Circle dedicated to this topic:

Good Luck!

Do read that thread linked by borism as it has both recommendations and warnings.

The only other advice I can offer regarding eBay is to read the sellers feedback.  There are reputable dealers on eBay.
