OK, stupid question but what does a diode do?  somehow I can't seem to find the answer to that question.

Josh,

Basically, a diode is a one way valve, that only allow electrons to pass one way, from the anode through the cathode, with some 'friction', the voltage drop. [and like any hydraulic valve, if you put too much pressure in the wrong direction, it will blow up] This is a very simplistic explanation. A more definitive explanation (that gives me a headache) -

so whats a soft recovery diode and a fast diode mean? :)

The short answer is they generate less switching noise, reducing EMI. More info can be found here

Speaking of diodes...

Anyone know the specifications of the following model of diode?

Motorola ZP IN 4700 9210

These are the stock models used in the CAL Delta Transport.
I am thinking of of locating hyperfast / ultrafast, soft-recovery diodes to replace them. Maybe the Stealth or HexFRED diodes.
