AudioQuest JitterBug
« on: 1 Oct 2015, 11:20 am »
Last night, I did some comparison listening for roughly 2 hours with my Bryston BDP-2 digital player.  My Bryston BDP-2 unit has the latest official software/firmware installed and the new/upgraded sound card (Integrated Audio Device [IAD]).

I connected my BDP-2 to my Devialet 200 via both AES/EBU & USB and switched back-and-forth between the two connections to compare sound quality.  This in no way was a very scientific experiment, just a personal experiment since I happened to be home alone yesterday evening & took advantage of the situation.  My AES/EBU cable is the Atlas Mavros digital cable ($485) and my USB cable is the AudioQuest Carbon ($170).

With these cables in place, I gave a slight edge to the AES/EBU connection.  It provided just a small amount of additional detail as compared to the USB connection which I expected given the price difference and built quality/material between the two.

However (to my surprise), when I introduced the AudioQuest JitterBug USB Data & Power Noise Filter ($50) to the AudioQuest Carbon USB cable, it was a different story.  With the introduction of the JitterBug, I could no longer hear a different between the two connections as the JitterBug provided a slightly quieter background allowing more detail to be heard.

This was my personal experience with my own equipment in my own living room.   However, when my wife came home, I repeated the tests for her and she came to the same conclusions I did.

So far, I'm really impressed with the AudioQuest JitterBug and wanted to pass this along (note: I have no affiliation with AudioQuest)!

I'm sure it made a nice difference.  I added an iFi USB Power Supply to my set-up and I thought I was crazy that I heard such a nice difference and I had a friend come over to confirm I wasn't crazy (or at least crazy with that conclusion )

I have an iFi Dac 2 with the iFi USB filter as well as two AQ Jitterbugs.  I have noticed similar changes for the better as stated above.  I noticed the biggest single change when either connecting the iFi or AQ piece.  I was extremely difficult to notice when I stacked them together.  I also put one in my usb3 hub, but have not been able to really sit down and A/B it.  I figured for 50 bucks, who cares.   I really like the iFi Dac 2, does wonders for my Mac Mini.

Samurai7595,

Can you turn off the 5VDC buss power on the your Bryston BDP-2's USB output?

The Devialet 200's USB input doesn't need to see the 5VDC buss power.

I have no idea if and how this can be done on the BDP-2.

Anyone know?

This little Bug cleans up grunge apparently from my external powered hard dive connected into my BDP-2 with IAD. I inserted it at the USB input to the BDP-2. I was rather taken back on the the improvement this Bug made! A lot of noise pollution seems to be injected into the USB from the power supply and what ever even in a lowly powered hard drive. Simply use the sBooster VBUS filter. It looks just like the AQ Jitterbug and it blocks the power from coming out of the bus as opposed to filtering it. $25.

I can tell you where to order it in the US. I bought 2.

That makes great sense when you think about it. If you're just using the USB for signal, no need to possibly muddy it up with power.

yes indeed. If your DAC does not need the 5V for the handshake, why even pass through the power?

That's true - I should do that with my Teac UD-501 in the secondary system as the power is on the chip in the DAC.

That's why I bought a data only usb cable.  However, based on what I've read, such a device could still offer an improvement.  I sent an e-mail to Uptone to ask about how the Regen works with a data only cable.  I'll let you know what they say.  But I'm willing to venture $25 to try the sBooster VBUS filter.

yes, please report back about the REGEN. Although it may have more to do with your DAC.

But...interestingly..the new iFI USB 3.0 does NOT work with the sBooster, where the previous iUSB did.

I'm using a Bryston Buc-1 usb converter with my YSF data only usb.  My old dac died and I'm limping along on an old Musical Fidelity X-Dac while I'm sorting through the market place.  The old x-dac actually sounds pretty good.
