Best smallish two-way speakers?
« on: 23 Jul 2015, 11:49 pm »
Could be stand mount, integrated stand, or small floor standers.  High price is OK (looking to discuss "best")

How 'bout Raidho D-1 and YG Carmel 2 to start...

edit: oops, meant two-way!

DIY speaker kits from Madisound, FE:  Seas BitFrost and others.
I also second the Vivids.
Supposedly the B&W PM1 sound fantastic.

Maybe the Fritz Carrera Illuminator or Rev 7.   Outstanding drivers and crossovers in beautiful (and well built) cabinets from a guy who really offers outstanding monitors in a variety of price ranges.

I have to throw in the Axiom M2V4 two way.  I have heard this monitor and compared it to the Omega RS5 driver.  Although the RS5 driver did sound better but the M2 held its own in its own right.  The Axiom M2V4 is a remarkable speaker.

Throw in the Nola Boxer 2 also.

I haven't heard these so I can't recommend them. But my instinct says, "check em out".

Green Mountain Audio Eos HX by Roy Johnson -- elegant 2-way, time-aligned first-order crossover, with superb construction/non-resonant enclosure.  Currently mine are driven by ASL 1006-845 monoblocks updated by Scott Frankland .

I used the Von Schweikert VR-1 Bookshelf Speakers for a time.
I mounted them on Target Audio Stands and they sounded real
nice. They can only be bought on the used market now and come
in three different colors if I remember correctly..
Good luck with your search..

Shouldn't the venerable LS3/5a be on the list too?   Great article on the Falcon's in Stereophile yesterday

I'm extremely happy with my new Totem Model-1's. I'd heard them many, many times before, and even had them on loan a long time ago from a dealer, but now I think I have the system synergy that brings out the best in them.

Not exactly small but the best I've heard:

Fried C5 (long discontinued, were mostly available as kits) used a mass loaded transmission line for mid/bass in a truncated pyramidally shaped cabinet.

Paradigm Active 20 (long discontinued, $1600/pair USD) very similar to Studio 20 v.2, but fully active design with vastly superior performance.

Munro Sonic Egg 150 ($3000/pair USD) composite egg shaped cabinet, external amps (active design).

Sonus Faber Extrema ($70,000/pair USD) uses a passive radiator.

+1 on the Joseph Pulsars. I bought a pair recently after being very impressed with their sound. I previously had Harbeth Compact 7's and Sonus Faber Venere 3's ( floor standers )

I suppose it depends on how we define 'small'.  Here are some of my favorite 'smallish' loudspeakers:

Rosso Fiorentino Certaldo

Totem Acoustic Hawk

Totem Acoustic 'The One'

Harbeth P3ESR

Joseph Audio Pulsar

Mark and Daniel Maximus-Mini

Dali Mentor Menuet

Fritz Morel 6
