On Record Cleaning
« on: 23 Jun 2015, 04:01 pm »
I just saw this thread:

vinyl coefficient of friction

Note that 'SY' is both a plastic's expert and a tube phono pre-amp designer.

Very interesting. I have yet to do more than protect my vinyl and use a brush before play.

Interesting...

by this logic the best method would be a gentle cleaning of a batch of records and allowing them to sit for a day or so prior to playing them.

"...if you remove the plasticizer from the surface, more will bloom back over a few hours or so. If you play the record immediately, the damage will unfortunately be permanent.

The goal of washing should be to only remove external contaminants, and there's some very good ways to do that- I'm sure many have been commercialized. I use distilled/deionized water with a tiny bit of a proprietary surfactant...

I kind of like this thread. http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/a-very-long-primer-on-record-cleaning-fluids.58986/ It addresses just about all of it and you don't have to be a chemical engineer to understand it.

I would say that you need to be much more a chemical engineer to understand it!
The main part of that thread is now some 10 years old and has a very different view-point than that of 'SY'.
