Dustcovers for Bryston Gear?
« on: 8 May 2015, 07:02 pm »
Hello Folks,
I've recently been kicking around the idea of having some pro quality custom fitted covers made for much of my gear,  I've recently ordered some covers for my 2 TEAC R2R Decks, and am seriously thinking of going further.

Not sure yet how the quality of the TEAC Covers will be from this one company yet, but am considering having next, a pair of good covers made for my 2 relatively new Bryston 7BssT2 Monoblocks.

I've recently inquired at another well regarded company called Radio Dust Covers, have been in a bit of coorespondence with Stan the owner, and seems Stan has done some recent 7B covers for another customer, and has dimension specs on hand for the 19" wide Faceplates with Rack Handles.

His TOTL Covers are made from a felt lined Ballistic Nylon. Look very nice, well constructed, and his covers appear to get exemplary reviews.

Has anyone here gone this route with custom covers?  And possibly the brand Radio Dust Covers?

I had initially thought something like a black Naugahyde might've been ideal, In that they would be perhaps easier to clean-maintain, dusts etc simply would wipe right off.  Stan says he does not carry a Naugahyde, but a black Vinyl.  I have no idea of the thickness, nor durability of this particular black vinyl he carries?

(I am getting a bit tired of the use of Pillowcases or Plastic Bags on much of my gear to try to keep dusts off.  It helps, but looks tacky)

Thank you folks for any help and guidance you may provide.
Mark

Never used dust covers but I know there is stuff like - http://www.computerdust.com/products/printer_covers.html
which has covers of all sizes.

You can also checkout Gingko Audio, they can build custom sizes too!

Hello again all,
I have two black vinyl covers on their way for my 2 TEAC R2R Machines, and once I have them in hand, I'll be able to better judge the quality of material and construction to make a judgement call, whether I'd like having them build some more covers for me.

I already have one nice cover for my VPI HW-19 Table, which has a boat load of custom mods, and would like staying with a black vinyl-naugahyde theme throughout. (Nothing at all wrong with those Gingko Covers, but being clear acrylic, they can be problematic to slip on-off gear that is in an audio rack, so not a good option for any equipment in such racks)

The Bryston Amps, well, I'm not the sort of guy who changes equipment like I change socks and like some filthy rich audiophiles who I know do with gear, I'd like taking these 7B Monos to the grave with me.

A $4800 Mac Preamp, a $3000 Sutherland PHD Phono Stage, I think these too should have some nice fitted covers, easy on, easy off.

I figger, the black vinyl will be easy to maintain, block all UV, Dust, and will be a good investment long term.

The Bryston Monos are almost carefree to maintain, except for the cooling fins on both sides. Haven't yet figured out a way to dust-clean these, without any incurrence of damage. Yanking Amps, cleaning each Fin with Microfiber is about the only safe way it seems.  I'd like putting off such tasks as long as possible.

The less I touch and monkey with these Amps, the better.  I'm the type of guy, that 20 years later, I want this equipment looking like the day I got them.

Hello all again,
Yesterday, I did receive two custom made black vinyl covers from Digital Deck Covers.

These two covers were for my two R2R TEAC Tape Decks, and were listed in their online Database.

Got tired of using Plastic Bags on these Units, and again, am tired of makeshift means to cover my other gear.

While I do have personal Upholstery experience, doing such at the Railroad for a number of years, and do own a decent Singer Consumer Sewing Machine, I am rusty, and at best never thought of myself as a master professional Upholsterer.

These covers I just got are very nicely made, nothing amateurish looking about them, the material is a very nice quality pebble textured black Vinyl, are very attractive, and will keep off dusts and any worry of UV damage for many years to come. (They have a number of different materials to choose from, I chose the Black Vinyl)

I believe I will go forward with some more Covers for many of my components, the Bryston 7BSST2 Monoblock Amps, and McIntosh Pre-Tuner will be the next top priorities, and think I'll also have a cover made for my Sutherland PHD Phono Stage-Preamp.   The costs IMO will be worth it. Dusts are a problem here in the desert southwest
So far it does not appear they have the models mentioned above in their Database, but this shouldn't be hard to provide them with the basic dimensions of this equipment. I'm thinking of having a simple flap opening at the rear of the covers to ease installation-removal, and to more easily fit around and cover-shield cabling at the rear of these Units.
I'll try uploading some pics soon of these.

PS:  I have no idea who made the cover for my VPI Table, won this cover from ebay some years back.  The person was very masterful, with the stitched embossed VPI Logo, and the material used was of a very high quality naugahyde.
