I am looking for a new CD player on a budget of around $700-$900. My system component to match the player are:
Speakers: VMPS 626R w/ FSt
Int. Amp: Antique Sound Labs 1003 DT
Music Preference: Heavily Rock, and some jazz

Players:

Naim Cd 3.5
Linn Genki
Ahh Tjoeb 4000
Cary 308T (non tube)
Rega Jupiter

What would you rank each player in the following categories 1 being the best and 5 the worst. I am looking for a good player that still has detail but is still musically engaging with good PRAT. The only player I can audition is the Cary.
The categories are:

I. Best in Details (microdynamics)

II. Best Imaging/Soundstage

III. Best Pace, Rythm, and Timing

IV. Most engaging player (this is up to your interpretation)

V. Best player for rock music and recordings

Im finding the more I learn the more confused I g

I've heard all of these except the Ahh Tjoeb- all in different systems, so take what I have to say with a grain of salt- no A/B comparisons were possible:

I. Best in Details (microdynamics) Naim- 3, Linn- 3, Cary-2, Rega-2

II. Best Imaging/Soundstage-Naim-4, Linn-3, Rega-3, Cary-1

III. Best Pace, Rythm, and Timing- Naim-1, Linn-3, Cary-4, Rega-2

IV. Most engaging player (this is up to your interpretation)Naim-1, Linn-3, Cary-3, Rega-2

V. Best player for rock music and recordings - Naim-1, Linn-3, Cary-4, Rega-2

Best of luck.  If you buy used for a good price and it doesn't work, at least you can put it back up on audiogon.  Remember with the Naim you need to buy a Din to RCA interconnect- I think audience and chord make some.

I see it is now edited.... :jester:
I would go with any of the british players....They only differ in presentation-just depends on how you like your PRAT served up.

Hello,

I've only heard three of your options. I chose the Ah! Njoe Tjoeb 4000 with upsampler.

I chose it because I was looking for a warm, fluid, vinyl-like sound without digital glare and harshness and it delivers with ease. I found it more musical than the Rega Jupiter I demoed and only slightly less pacey than the Naim 5i. It's a fantastic piece of kit.

Two caveats:

1) No one will be impressed by its outward appearance. It looks every bit the entry-level Marantz CD 4000 that it is modified from.

2) It needs around 200-300 hours run-in before revealing its true sonic potential.

The Tjoeb is a very flexible platform for further modifications, if you like. I added a substantial amount of damping material to the inner-chassis, increasing its mass and eliminating extraneous resonance.

Finally, you can further refine the Tjoeb's sound by trying different tubes. Once I rolled-in a pair of NOS Siemens 7308 (E188CC) tubes it became even more satisfying.

Cheers,

Dex
