I have a weakness for good transformers.  There's something about good iron that I cannot resist! 

I don't have photos of my "collection" as I might be forced to confront a problem I'd rather deny existed...

They sure are.  The primary reason this 6AH4 sounds so good is the step down transformers.  This preamp is quieter than most SS preamps I have had.   :o

^^^ Yes! step downs work wonders in preamps to lower the voltage, impedance and noise all in one shot. Who needs 25V p-p to drive their power amps? Most amps clip well before 2V p-p input.

Here's the power transformer to one of my amps. It's custom wound by an industrial transformer winder here in Seattle. It's chunky! Rated for 50 / 60hz service, with a temp rise rating of 115 degrees, 410VA. Noise level (acoustic buzz) is rated at 40dB max! These guys know what they're doing.

Never order audio transformer in a commercial transformer builder.
This result may be it, the lump in the side is a amendment with solder in the winding that the negligent do.
This is a 3A, 2,5kg toroidal to reduce 220V to 120V to a CD player.

Unfortunatelly a new try with a 6kg toroid dont reveal better sound quality, even with alu tape and QED speaker cable as leads.

You could try the commercial grade baking pans. I am working on a project that uses 9x13x 2 aluminum pans. they are quite sturdy. I can stand on one and it does not flex. I weigh in at 250lbs. they cost around $25 a piece. I found them locally at a specialty cooking shop.
You can also buy aluminium spray paint that bakes on for a very hard finish.

Thanks for remember this option, I will look here if they have 5mm pan.
I cant use these 1 or 2 mm pan you mention as the transformers are too heavy.
