Wow very instrutive post, being a non tech person I never could suspect it.
Thanks :thumb:

This picture shows a Tribute transformer which has stacked cores, not the best design concern copper losses and parasitic magnetic and capacity losses.
That's why this transformer has a very bad high frequency response (-3dB 35kHz)

http://diytriode.republika.pl/drugi_eng.htm

I agree E55, not a good transformer response. One has to also consider the lack of interleaving and sectionalizing of the windings to minimize capacitance and leakage inductance. In the link I see the author is using 7k primary impedance (Z). The higher the primary impedance (higher ratio pri to sec windings) the lower the high frequency response is. I have seen OPTs with much much higher FR than that one.

-3db at 35khz will be tenths down even at 8.5khz, thus perceptible.

Cheers

Yes, you are right Steve but i am afraid that this transformer is as with most transformers from Tribute an easy design (just interleaving, maybe 10-12 layers) I was many times at Tribute and never saw any sofisticated design there, just a lot of iron and nicely potted. I think that not many people are interested in good designs.

That is an interesting post; I won't comment on the manufacturer at all.

I will say that the diy community tends to control what is manufactured and sold to the general public. Sometimes large manufacturers will have parts custom manufactured for them, and extra is available to the public. But I think that is somewhat rare (depends upon the def of rare?).

Have you found any more besides three or four OPTs that are good?? (I am assuming that if a proper circuit were used in the test, the low frequency response is good.)

Cheers
Steve

Tango transformers are back in production! these are first production Tango X10S and NC20 for my WE 212 amplifier being built. Very nice case, the X10S case now matched with NC20.

WAVAC bought Tango over a year ago, they start producing Tango line. These are first two products Tango X10S and NC20.

Dare I even ask what they are going for now?

I have a question for anyone who cares to answer.

How can one determine any given transformer's quality just by looking at its specs? Is this possible, or must it be tested as well?

I ask because I was given a tour of a factory in Taiwan last year. This factory has been producing transformers for something like 40 years.

Thank you.

Michael

E55L2 would answer your question in detail, but I think basically its a extended freq range in bass and treble, good power handling, low noise etc
Please note the quality of the parts used in construction make a major difference, the best parts are .03mm or thinner HiB or Finemet C cores, secondary in silver.

A great transformer builder cant do miracle w/SiFe EI .03mm.
