Salk Signature Guitar?
« on: 9 Oct 2014, 01:44 am »
So I'm watching my nephew play guitar in a rythem and Blues club when I start to wonder what guitar Jim would build for himself.

Jim, seems like guitars would be a natural extension of your music and woodworking backgrounds, have you given them any thought?

No offense to Jim, but musical instruments are a whole other world.  watch the videos of how a Martin is put together.  It's an entirely different skill set.

The process if building an acoustic guitar like a Martin is not something I have the time to learn.  An electric guitar, on the other hand, is really not all that difficult.

That said, I already have a guitar I would never part with.  And I can't think of anything I would do to improve upon it.  It was built by Tom Anderson.

When I started building speakers, it was because I couldn't find the speakers I really wanted.  My goal was to build speakers like Tom Anderson builds guitars...phenomenal sounding and gorgeous to look at.  He was my inspiration. (And many of the techniques we employ in finishing were the result of seeing some of Tom's early creations.)

Since I would probably never be able to build a guitar as fine as the Anderson I already own, I really have no desire to try.  I think I'll stick with speakers where there is still room to push the envelope.

Anyone who makes guitars for Santana must really know what they are doing.  I didn't  mean to offend with my comment.  Jim, you are an artist, just an artist in a different medium.  I am sort of obsessed with luthiery.  It is so cool to watch a guitar made.  Martin is much a factory more than an artisan shop (until you hit the $25kish range).  Bespoke guitars can be had cheaper if you don't futz about having a name no one knows (or only the right people know).

And I like the concept of this, if not the guitars: http://www.kellyguitars.com/

Also check out Terry C. McInturff guitars and David Thomas McNaught guitars.

I have a McNaught G-5.  It's a very impressive instrument.  I've also owned McInturff guitars in the past.  I wish I wouldn't have sold the Taurus; that was also one heck of a guitar!

Here's picture of my G-5:

Here's a picture of the McInturff Taurus Standard I used to own:
