ohm Walsh 2 - need some guidance quick
« on: 16 Jun 2014, 10:13 pm »
A pair of these just popped up on craigslist near me. I know nothing about them, except it's a name to look for.

Since it's craigslist, I don't have much time to research. Are these a worthy speaker? Is $175 a fair price - seller says fabric socks aren't great, drivers and surrounds are 100%.

Thanks!

Mike B.

$175 sounds fair if you want to get some experience with omni directional loudspeakers. I think they were hampered by poor high frequency performance if I remember correctly? It is a example of a important new direction in sound reproduction. I suspect you can double your money if you wish to move them on the national market.

Ohm also apparently has a trade-in program - http://ohmspeaker.com/legacy-products/2/

I should note that I have Ohm Micro Walsh Talls in a spare system and really like them.  Like the Walsh 2s, they are designed for a small room.

The ohm speaker website recommends an amplifier of 125 Watts. Is that even close to true? Seems like a lot.

For my Ohm Walsh Micro Talls they recommend 35-125W.  I'm using a Bryston 3BST which is 120W into 8 ohms and 200 into 4

The knock on the Walsh drivers were always that they took hi wattage to drive them- and that they didn't hold up well.  But in the day, they sounded very good.  I remember that they handled piano quite realistically; not an easy task still.

S Clark got there first (and I remember that too) :The early Ohm Walshes had a rep for "200 watts to drive, 250 watts to blow it up".

Those early ones differed from the "modern" ones in one key aspect: They were true single-fullrange-driver systems (the Walsh driver handled everything)(Shoutout to fullrangeman). All the current models use a tweeter to handle the extreme highs. This apparently allows much more favorable electrical characteristics from the Walsh driver (higher sensitivity, better dynamic range.)

It's an interesting concept. I have not heard a pair but I'd like to. If you're listening, Ohm, come to Capital Audiofest!

Thanks everyone. Unfortunately I don't think these are the right speakers for me right now. I would love to own a pair-its a very compelling design.

I'm building FW aleph-j clone that will put out approx 25 watt into 8 ohm, 13 watt into 4 ohm. Nowhere near the power requirements of the speakers.

My 1st 'official' audio gear back in the 80's!  Even though I was just beginning to 'train' my ears and didn't really know much about the nuances of listening to better gear, I loved them!  After them I upgraded to Kef 104.2's and than......;)

I drive Ohm 1000's in a small room with a 22 watt SET. However, a 22 watt 845 based SET sounds a LOT stronger than your average 22 watt amp.....especially if the amp in question is solid state.  In my somewhat limited experience, nothing works in a small room like an Ohm. If the speakers appear to be in decent shape, I can't see how you could get hurt at that price......plus the support is there if you need it. The owner ( John Strohbeen) has always picked up the phone in my experience. They are a completely different and refreshing listening experience IMHO.

Thanks guys for all your help. I actually picked up a pair of Walsh 4xo's, which on paper have a smaller power requirement. And the ohm website says it's one of their more efficient models.

They sound really good with my current setup. With any luck they'll work with the aleph.
