Can anyone help me out getting started with a D2800MT CAPS?

Not sure the steps to take to get OS on etc.
What OS do you want on it? Are you aware that is has been end of lifed? I'd recommend you purchase an Intel NUC where all you have to do is add disk, memory and an OS and you're good to go but since that not what you asked, I'll point you to the interactive board demo and step through it.
http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/desktops/desktop-board-dn2800mt-interactive-layout-demo-video.html0. You'll probably want to install this board in a case. You can scour the web for one that suits your fancy.
1. You need to get 19V to the board. (Number 34). So you need to find a 19V power supply, paying special attention to getting the proper tip size for the connector.
2. You need a SATA disk drive. Number 8 is for powering it, 7 is for the data cable.
3. You need RAM. Plug the DIMMs into number 16.
4. Does it come with a coin cell battery installed, number 4? If not you'll want one of these so your settings don't go bye bye when you lose power to the board.
5. Now you are ready to install an OS. Which one do you want? You'll need to get the computer to recognize wherever the OS installation program is located. In this case you'll need to put the OS onto a USB drive or stick and configure the computer BIOS to be bootable from the USB port.
6. Once you have the base OS installed you can use the wired network port to get network connectivity to update the computer's drivers and get updates to the operating system.
7. You have two slots (numbers 9 and 24) to add cards. For example if you want to add a wireless card see number 9.
There are build instructions on the website. There's probably a ton of stuff on Youtube as well.

If you want a real cheapie, here's a barebones with case and power supply for $140! Personally I spend another $125 to get one that's half the height on the one below.
