BP 26 question
« on: 27 Jan 2014, 05:45 pm »
Hello all,
I have been looking to replace my Bryston SP 1.7 preamplifier processor with a two channel preamp. Currently, I only use the SP 1.7 in two channel bypass mode which is why I was looking for a dedicated two channel preamp. I have been looking at the BP 26. With the XLR inputs and outputs, it looks like the best deal for me. My question is whether I will hear a noticeable difference with the BP 26 over my existing preamp? Are the internal analog components the same or different/upgraded? Compared with the other Bryston preamps, is this the best sounding of the three? Thank you in advance for your replies, Pete

"Will you hear a noticable difference" Well that depends in your ancillary equipment.
I can say that my BP-26 seems to be able to keep up with any other improvements i meke to my setup. So does the Bryston 4B-SST²
All depends on whatever is the weakest link in your system. So you might not be able to hear much of a difference depending on what the BP-26 is connected to.???
I can say if you buy a BP-26 it will not be a limiting factor in the forseeable future, but then I do not know what your current Sp 1.7 sound like in comparison.

I think that you are going to be a bit better off with the separate power supply idea as well as the polarity switch that the bp26 offers.

I agree with the idea of an outboard supply.  :thumb:

Thanks all. I am planning to add a Bp 26 to the 14bst amp and Salk SS8 speakers. I later want to get a BDP2 and a Bda2 and I should be done! Thanks Pete

I agree with Elizabeth.  I've owned both a BP-26 and a BP-17.  You wouldn't be limited by either one.

I don't know what your current source is, but the BDA-2 was the most dramatic and amazing upgrade I've ever made (from a newer Rotel prepro and its built in dac). The BDP-2 is no slouch either. You have a good preamp in the SP1.7. You might want to reconsider the order of your purchaces, depending on your current source and DAC.

That's a great idea and I have thought about the order. Currently I use an Oppo BDP105 and a Cambridge Audio 840c CD player. I have pondered getting the BDP2 andBDA2 first but I would have to use the SP 1.7 as the preamp. I was thinking that I should hold off on the DAC  until the DSD issue in the Bda is resolved.

That is a completely reasonable concern.

Not to hijack your post, but DSD or PCM, I just hope the music industry moves to releasing higher quality recordings with more dynamic range, regardless of format.
