"Up for auction is this Vintage VMPS Dedicated Subwoofer in excellent condition. The walnut veneer is fantastic, as is the grill. The drivers are great as well.

This thing is a monster - it is rated at 300 watts; though some have driven them with much more power. It has a 12" front firing driver and a 15" downward firing passive radiator and a forward facing vent. The cabinet measures approximately 28" x 22" x 18". I thought I had heard "home theater" before, but this thing will make you think you are sitting at the local IMAX or a live concert! The bass is simply amazing in terms of depth and quantity.

Due to the size of this item, it is being sold for local pickup. It is simply too large and heavy to ship via standard methods. I am located 45 minutes from downtown Chicago in NW Indiana; and my schedule is pretty flexible.

If the specs are correct, they've got a nice Xmax and are certainly worth your reasonable asking price as long as they're used properly.  They've got a dropping and then pretty ragged looking response above about 500 Hz, which worked great for Brians design, but they are definitely not intended for a 2-way design.  Hopefully soemone is looking for either spares or replacements for their RM30, or I would suspect 626R as well.

The RM40 on the left are the style I would split up for a center. I do have a set of AC G1 ribbions I planned to install in these but have not yet done so.

This is the way the system is already setup, RM40s FL, FR, SL and SR with a RM2 for Center

But I think a better setup would be RM40 L, R, C and RM2s for the surround.

Bass Notes: Herein lies one of the most unique qualities  of THIS True Full Range transducer array. In testing the bass specifications of this Tower II special edition using Stereophile Test CD2 and an SPL meter,  I was actually up 2dB at 25Hz, and only down 4dB at 20Hz! But far more important was the weight and impact these speakers imparted on bass lines. Without any "boominess" or obfuscation of bass lines, these speakers simply handled all the low notes with a clarity, tunefulness, and ease I have not heard from other speakers. This isn't "subwoofer bass," as the bass integrates into the music as coherent and seamlessly as I could hope for-and in a way I haven't heard from systems using separate add-on subs.

Mid>> The first is the midrange  Majik of the one-of-a-kind Dynaribbon midrange, a 6" square, push-pull planar dynamic driver with a rigid diaphragm and flat response from 500Hz to 5 kHz. No cone, regardless of design or diaphragm material, can match the Dynaribbon's sound quality. This is due to a fundamental difference in design: the Dynaribbon is driven evenly over its entire surface by 12 Alnico bar magnets, so that its rigid corrugated styrene diaphragm moves completely pistonically. A cone, on the other hand, is driven by a single magnet from its apex, and depends on rigidity of its diaphragm to approximate pistonic behavior. Since all materials flex, cones have considerable time latarting and stopping, pronounced breakup modes, and delay due to the path length difference from apex to edge.

The Dynaribbon enjoys all the advantages of planar drivers but is also rugged, very low distortion, with high power handling and output levels   They are efficient enough that with the 15 watts of the ASL amp, my ears will give out long before the speakers or the amp, but even when played louder than I would normally listen, there is no compression or restriction of the dynamic contrasts in the music. Even then, when something goes "pop" it is a big-ass pop! And if it's all the subtle dynamic shadings that add so much to the emotional impact of music you're concerned about, these get that right, too. All told, from a standpoint of reproducing the dynamics of music (all types), these are simply the best speakers I have auditioned at home, and among the best I have heard anywhere else.

In fact, over the whole range covered by the ribbons, these speakers are as open, transparent, uncolored, detailed, and dynamic as anything I have heard. The coherency of using a single driver over such a wide range is evidence in the ability to sound "right" regardless of the type of music being played.

   I've given these speakers an unfair bit of extra copy here, but I think they deserve it. They are required listening for lovers of large scale rock, folk classical and very well suited to organ and opera. In spite of all their qualities and complexities, they are both tremendously good speakers and a tremendous value."

"VMPS Subwoofer in excellent physical and functional working condition but in need of some TLC.

The subwoofer works but one of the voice coils in the dual voice coil driver isn't working. Running it from the sub out on the receiver to a dedicated sub woofer amp effectively negates this issue as only one voice coil is needed. The other issue is that the foam surround on the down firing passive radiator has begun to dry rot and will need to be replaced. For these reasons it's offered as a project for the bargain price of $100. I have to think the furniture quality cabinet alone is worth more than that that to a hobbyist. It includes the original owner's manual as well as the tinted glass that sits on top of the cabinet making it into a nice end table.
