I want to find out which is the best,I was designing and building loudspeakers a long time ago(90s),so refresh my memory,it would be interesting to know which is the best today(more popular),back then i went for sealed boxes and I still do today, but what is your pick and why, please keep the subject sealed vs ported when posting...thanks guys...
I don't see that one is "better" than the other. All speaker designs have their tradeoffs and it really comes down to your priorities with regard to bass extension, efficiency, room size, placement, and perhaps even the types of music you mostly listen to.
Then there are the planar and OB devotees, who argue that the best box is no box....
To expand on this. Execution is very important. One has you also consider that most drivers (midbasses anyway) available for diy today are aimed at vented boxes, so that is most often how you will see them used.Myself, i am not a big fan of "traditional" vented boxes. They are typically tightly tuned using a set of T/S parameters. But T/S parameters are not scaler, they are curves depending (largely) on drive levels. This means that due to use of the volume controls and the dynamics in the music themselves vented boxes are usually out of tune. One can reduce this issue by adding an "R" to the vent. This can take the form of some sort of damping material (a so called aperiodic vent), or by making the vent such that it has a high aspect ratio. One gives up some extension/quantity in exchange for better quality. If you can find a woofer that works sealed, you can get some really high quality bass, and the roll-off can often be better matched to roon gain.... i'm still looking for a suitable replacemnt for the CSS SDX7.dave
Planet10, it is much easier to build a sealed loudspeaker than any other type!!,if you can factor in power vsbox size then that's it no more to worry about, any speaker can be used as long as you get the box size right...
but you may well find that most diy drivers available today will have limited LF extention.dave
This is what i also found in my days of loudspeaker buildingloudspeaker systems efficiencies sealed vs portedloudspeaker systems efficiencies (bass)basicly are the opposite in regard to these two systemslow watt sealed is most efficient(acoustically) whereas low watt ported is least efficient(acoustically)high watt sealed is least efficient(accoustically) whereas high watt ported is most efficiently(accoustically)regards...
Hi Georgopoulos and all Audio Circle members.May I ask if you could re-write your post with improved English.Your write up is confusing,I really don't know what you are saying or what you want to tell us. Please try again with different words.Guy 13
Is a passive radiator a ported design or sealed? I have had two different passive radiator design speakers.
Is a passive radiator a ported design or sealed?
Sealed loudspeaker systems are best at low loudness levels.Ported loudspeaker systems are best at high loudness levels. For home use sealed is better. For club use ported is better.
