Help with a sub connection (edit) fixed
« on: 7 Nov 2013, 08:37 pm »
I just got a used Pioneer AVR. I was using a Denon receiver where I connected the RCA L/R pre-outs to the inputs on the sub. No problems there.

In the back there is one SW pre-out, so I ran to the local Rat Shack and bought a 2 to 1 adaptor. Quick set up says "sub detected." I go through and select 4.1 speakers then it asks me to confirm. Nothing. Sub is on. On the front, there is "sub ch mode" button. I toggle thru on/auto/off. Nothing. Also on the back, there are Pre-outs for the surrounds/center/front speakers. I plug it in there without any adaptor, redo the set up procedure. Nothing.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

How is the sub set up? If you were running from preouts before your sub was doing the crossover. The sub out will be crossed over signal based on a value in the settings. Could be the signal from your AVR is below the set crossover on the sub.

Is there a small speaker setting?

I think I remember on some receivers you need to set this to get a sub output.

If I understand correctly, I've turned the low pass filter on the sub from 80hz > 160 hz. Still nothing.

Went through the manual, looked up SW set up and went through that too. Still nothing. Maybe the sub channel is broken?

OK, now something has changed.

It works with my computer DAC into the DVD/LD input but not my CD player in the CD input!!!

It only works in the DVD input.  :duh:

Another bizarre thing - when I toggle thru the speakers, the sub works with both sets and A but not the B set.

Are the output settings different between the two inputs? By output settings, I mean Stereo, Direct or Dolby.

It works on Direct, Stereo and Surround modes.

So I guess I had to set it via the remote.

It all works now outside of using only the B set of speakers - which is what confused me for the latter part because that's what I was listening/testing with.
